Album Notes This is part of the Revival series, coproduced by Bloodshot and Soundies Records. The late Spade Cooley was known as the King of California Western Swing, as the late Bob Wills was known as the King of Texas Western Swing. The music is a fusion of country music, western music (there was a time when they were separate, long before the term "country and western" happened), big band and small group swing jazz, blues, Tin Pan Alley pop and Texas-Mexico border music. The hybrid was a major force in American popular music until Nashville country, mainstream pop (i.e., Doris Day, Johnny Mathis) and 1950s rock & roll came along. Spade Cooley was one of the most popular bandleaders in the mid-1940s heyday of western swing, though unlike Bob Wills and some of his contemporaries, he played a smoother, more pop-oriented, slightly less jazz-influenced brand of western swing. This album is a collection of previously unreleased recordings from 1944-45, made exclusively for radio broadcasts--and they feature the vocals of Tex Williams, who would go on to solo fame with the hit "Smoke! Smoke! Smoke! That Cigarette." The recording quality is excellent, and the 25 songs range from the smooth croon of "There is No Sunshine" (with its sentimental accordion) to the swingin' pedal steel guitar-driven "I Found a New Baby."
