The inseparable odd pair of contract killers Rose (Helen Mirren) & Mikey (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) cross boundary after boundary of US laws & ethics. That's what makes this movie so unique & intriguing. It's got quite an unusual plot!
Since Rose is dying, she's going on her last contract kill(s) with Mikey, her stepson. Once on the job, with four of their men targets already shot dead, Mikey is surprised when Rose refuses to kill a very pregnant target who goes into labor at the sight of Rose & her gun aimed her way. Instead of killing the primary target, Rose successfully delivers her baby.
Off the four, instead of two, go, into hiding. Sexual boundaries are crossed. Ethical boundaries are too. It's nearly comical that a once renowned hit woman spares another woman's & her newborn baby's lives. Rose has an alterior motive, though. That becomes apparent in the end.
If I give you any more details I'll ruin the intrigue of the boundary crossings. So I'll leave it saying that I feel they are the most significant part of this well acted, directed, and scripted film. The title "Shadowboxer," is quite fitting.
