If you can't find this film it may be because it has also gone by the title of "Great Moments in Aviation." (I'm not revealing a thing about why this film has gone by that title because it has to do with a particular element of the film's intrigue).
An intrigue, the film's set on board a trans-Atlantic cruise ship during the 1950's. Among those repeatedly in scenes are Vanessa Redgrave as Dr. Angela Bead, a British missionary on her way home from the West Indies who's harboring a secret; Dorothy Tutin as Gwendolyn Quinn, the missionary with whom Dr. Bead shares their secret; Rakie Ayola as Gabriel Angel, a young West Indian woman who finds romance when she meets Duncan Stewart (Jonathan Pryce), a charismatic Scottish photographer who is not at all who he seems to be. In fact, his passion could be more for murder than for her! & John Hurt as Rex Goodyear, a respected art historian with a mysterious past who's missing a valuable painting.
As Gabriel Angel begins to untangle the out-right lies & somewhat scandalous deceptions surrounding all of the strangers around her, her suspicions erupt into a harrowing confrontation on their last night at sea; after which, nothing between any of the strangers will ever be the same. Even Gabriel begins to have new insights into herself while she simultaneously changes the future for all of the people around her.
The cast's performances are outstanding & the story line is intriguing & complex. My favorite character's played by Vanessa Redgrave who's the scene stealer~
