Synopsis
Chuck Klosterman's series of essays on pop culture's interaction with real life is an exploration of our obsession with celebrity, what drives it, and how frequently the lines between entertainment and reality become blurred. It's also an entertaining tour around the inside of Klosterman's brain--few subjects seem to exist that he can't squeeze some meaning and intellectual parallels out of, be they Internet porn, STAR WARS, or the MTV show THE REAL WORLD. A diatribe against soccer turns into a meditation on how bad refereeing reflects life, while his ruminations on the nature of reality, as portrayed in the movies VANILLA SKY and MEMENTO, lead to a fascinating questionnaire that is as challenging as it is entertaining.

SMART & FUNNY! Humorous Assessment of Pop Culture.
    Review created: 01/14/08
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Chuck Klosterman's book Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs is a brilliant assessment of the broad spectrum of American pop culture. He critiques the vast wasteland of post-modern society with wit, intelligence, and an acerbic keyboard. His off-beat associations are humorous and thoughtful.

Klosterman's exasperatingly simple deconstruction of life into a Boston Celtics versus Los Angeles Lakers choice is wickedly funny, particularly to those who vividly remember the 1980s era teams which starred Larry Bird and Magic Johnson.

Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs has many laugh-out-loud moments and is a great read for anyone who is anti-establishment. The book contains some four-letter language and has some themes- pornography, religion, and certain internet issues- which some readers might find offensive. That being said, if you enjoy an honest evaluation of a culture consumed with itself, you will enjoy this book.
