Publisher's Note Leather and suede are luxurious, comfortable, and very, very durable. And popular opinion to the contrary, they are not difficult to sew. There are differences, however, between fabric-sewing and leather-sewing techniques, and that's what this book is about. Modern tanning methods have resulted in a wide range of high-quality leather and suede that is easy to sew with a standard home sewing machine. Modern skins and hides are made for ease of care and maintenance, with some that are even machine washable! The author gives a good description of the special tools and notions that work best with leather. Basic sewing techniques and stitches are described and illustrated with photographs. Subsequent chapters tell in detail how to plan a leather garment, beginning with design and pattern adjustment, continuing to cutting, sewing, and lining. A special chapter on embellishment techniques illustrates ways in which garments can be made unique through custom finishing touches: applique, unique pocket designs, stenciling, cording and binding, and handmade buttons. In addition to how-to photos, there are photos of approximately 30 of the author's own garments and accessories to illustrate not just the sewing techniques but the tremendous versatility of leather and suede.
