"The Seven Ups"

This 1973 film brings auto stunt driving legend Bill Hickman (Bullitt, French Connection) to the big screen again for another taut and thrilling chase scene. This time it is through the gritty late winter streets of New York city. Hickman and his partner (Richard Lynch) are running a scheme kidnapping mobsters for the ransom money, when they inadvertantly shoot and kill an undercover cop who is part of an elite task force known internally to the police as the "Seven Ups".
Veteran actor Roy Scheider is another of the "Seven Ups" group, and catches Hickman and Lynch leaving the parking garage where his undercover partner has just been shot.
This is the beginning of a 10 minute high speed chase through the streets of NYC.
The plot and acting are average to good - nothing that would make your Top 10 movie list. But the chase scene, like the one in Bullitt, is nothing short of amazing.

Overall, for fans of Roy Scheider, and most especially for fans of the Bill Hickman style of pedal flat to the floor driving - this is a worthwhile movie to catch.

  Classic 70's Cops and Robbers...

F-I-N-A-L-L-Y.....the DVD version is out!!!

Did ya like "The French Connection"? Sure you did. That film's Producer (Philip D'Antoni) directs this early 1970's NYC story about extortion of big time wise-guys by, as the Sargent puts it "some guys disguised as undercover police". Add to that the fact that "Buddy" (Roy Scheider) has a vendetta to settle and, well...it's a great film.
If you're weird like me, and you enjoy seeing films with an urban setting (downtown / uptown scenes, steam coming out of sewer covers, dirty, abandoned buildings), you'll appreciate the camerawork and direction.
The main parallel between this film and "French" is that once again, D'Antoni captures his 2nd of modern film's greatest car chases.

This movie is a must for you "guy-film" collectors - even if you aren't a guy (smile).

My husband has been talking about this movie for a long time. I was thrilled when I found it on Half.com and got it for him for Christmas. He already has seen it twice and loves the chase scene. Great movie for car lovers.

  Great car chase scene

If you have a collection of car movies and like chase scenes, this one has a good one = the movie itself might be a little slow developing compared to today's standards, but remember, this came out in '73 = THANKS

Circa SERPICO and THE FRENCH CONNECTION, THE SEVEN-UPS script is predictable but the car chase is one of the best (pre-RONIN). It rivals BULLET but in New York rather than San Francisco. Even without the hills its 4-wheels off the ground! The bad guys are bad, the good guys are almost bad. The settings are gritty. Enjoy the ride.

  The 7-Ups:

I loved it, again :)! I saw this as a kid, but I wasn't able to see it in the theatre- Just the cleaned-up tv version. I grew-up on the very streets which it was filmed. I never forgot the chase scene :o. I started sneeking people's keys (uncles, neighbors, sister's boyfriends, etc.), and taught myself to drive. Much later, as an adult, I mimiked this style of driving through Brooklyn, New Jersey and Los Angeles. Surprisingly, I've only racked-up 3 speeding tickets. Anyway, It's a good flick about mob and undercover elite cop, stuff. The cars are huge, with crappy suspensions. I think watching The Departed made me jones for this excellent flick.

Great 70's police and car chase movie.

I am a car guy and this movie has a great chase scene. The movie overall is a great example of 70's films. I would have preferred more car chases and more action, but again, this is a 70's film and is great considering the period that it was produced! Great for those who like a good car chase and those who enjoy police films.

  Classic Chase Scene
Review created: 07/11/06

Bullet set the standard for the best car chase scene in movie history...until the 7-ups was made. Philp D'Antoni was the producer in Bullet and took that expereince and enhanced it in the 7-ups. There is even a special feature diagraming the making of the famous chase scene on the DVD. This is must see movie. Turn up the surround sound on your sound system and sit back in your seat for a thrilling ride. You will not be disappointed.
