Bar none, one of the best films ever produced. A benchmark by which all others are measured. Outstanding story, covering all aspects of an entertaining movie. Camera work is well ahead of its time. Great shots, action sequences, and slowly building tension of a certain outcome. If you are a film lover, and want to see a film that shows a blueprint that has been copied by many directors in every country, this is it. Enjoy!

The pinnacle in Japanese filmmaking! A great film from start to finish. Akira Kurosawa was a genius at the art of film. Great performances by all, especially Toshiro Mifune and Takashi Shimura. A true classic. Highly recommend it!!!!

I havent seen this movie since i was 13-14 but it still was as amazing to me now as it was then. The characters are simply amazing and you find yourself laughing at alot of the jokes in the movie. The music and story are amazing and compelling. There is a reason why this movie has been on the top 10 greatest movies list since it was made in 1956 A MUST BUY!

This is a wonderful study on the development of the film industry and cross cultural influences. This movie created the scenario of The Magnificent 7 and the spaghetti westerns of the future. Well worth watching. It is easy to get caught up in the action, the funny stuff, the serious side etc. Well done!

  A vast improvement
Review created: 01/24/08

If you've seen a previous release of "Seven Samurai," you haven't really seen it. The new digital transfer is just amazing - the picture looks incredibly crisp, the sound is great. Haven't delved into the special features much yet, but the accompanying book is a nice addition. If you're going to own a copy of this movie (and you really should), this is far and away the best edition to own. You owe it to yourself to see the movie the way it's meant to be seen.

  The "extras" are outstanding

This movie has been a favorite of mine for decades (I first saw it at the old Toho La Brea Theater in Los Angeles, home to Kurowawa movies in Southern California). The 2006 release contains some commentaries that were highly enlightening, even for one who has read several books on samurai history and traditions. The additional stuff also gives you a fine insight into the development of Japanese cinema, particularly as it was influenced by external events. While the movie is admittedly long, over three hours, ask yourself what scenes could you cut without compromising the story. This DVD set isn't cheap, but then neither are Ferraris or Patek Phillippe watches!

  The greatest film ever made
Review created: 12/07/07

I will not go into a full description of this movie. I'm sure that's available. I will only say that there is no other film-watching experience like the one you can have with The Seven Samurai. It has been my first choice of film for at least twenty years. There is nothing else that comes close, not only in entertainment value, but in offering the viewer a feeling of connection with the human experience and with all humanity. If you've never seen it, hurry up and do so. If you have seen it, you will never get tired of watching it. I'm about to view it for the tenth time or so, and I'm so looking forward to it!

  Seven Samurai Review

Never before has a director been able to make his audience love the characters more than Akira does in Seven Samurai. In the 3+ hour movie, you grow terribly fond of each and every character which in its self, is reason to buy this movie. The camera work makes you stand in astonishment thinking "How could they have possibly pulled these shots off in 1954?" weather it be from the composition of the shot or the technical skill it took to perform the pictures. This movie portrays a life every person wants to live, a life full of standing, standing up for what you believe is right, even when the odds are horribly against you.

If you've ever watched an action film...
Review created: 06/20/07

...And said to yourself "Wow, I wonder how they got that idea?" or "Gee, that had excellent cinematography", look no further than Kurosawa's quintessential masterpiece Seven Samurai, the very definition of an epic, and the movie that started it all. Honestly, if you've ever been curious about seeing this film, do yourself a favour and watch it. It's been credited as the first action movie ever made, and it truly lives up to its name. And the Criterion Re-issued box set is unbelievable, as is the exceptional job they did in the remastering process: It looks and sounds as though it came out this year, yet it's 53 years old.
Again, do yourself a favour, see this movie.
