The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work by John Mordechai Gottman, Nan Silver (2000, Paperback)

Even after talking about divorce, my husband and I got this book while we were in Germany for six months and it saved my marriage. The quizes and things in the book are really fun to do with each other and it greatly helped our communication skills. Since reading this book, things have never been better. Even if your relationship is good, this book can enrich it. EXCELLENT doesn't begin to describe it. It has become invaluable.

At the age of 53, I am considering getting married for the first time. This book, recommended to me by our pre-marriage counselor, is an excellent resource. The exercises were fun, and very enlightening. We feel even more sure of our decision to marry as this book has validated in a very real way that we are indeed compatible and have a real chance for success. I highly recommend this book to all married and soon-to-be-married couples. It is too important a relationship to not seek some expert advice.

John Mordechai Gottman has a great gift of explaining how to have an emotionally intelligent marriage. I would also recommend his book on raising an emotionally intelligent child. His writing style is easy to follow but yet full of good advise to make a marriage better. I've enjoyed every page of his books.

Excellent book and also very fun. My husband and I enjoy doing the activies together. The entire book is written very clearly, and Gottman gives examples to ensure that his Seven principles are well understood.

i loved this book. excellent life long tools for communicating with people even outside your marriage.. not one for self help books, we're not even married yet, but i've used some tools in discussions with my fiance already and they work great. i've even taken the same basic skills learned and used them with my friends and co-workers, and they work every time. it's even been commented that i solved a very difficult co-worker situation in the most 'grown-up, calm, mature way'.

This book takes it back to the basics and gives you tools to work with your partner. There are exercising in the book that you can do together. It has been very helpful! I would tell everyone from those unmarried to those married for 20 years to read it.

Easy to read and excellent resource for people in a relationship. If you still have love for your significant other and you two are willing to follow what Gottman says, your relationship can be revived. We are studying it, and our relationship is already improving. This is the only book I would recommend among all the relationship books that I have read.

Wanted to see what this author thought the 7 principles of marriage were. He has a good point of view throughout the book. If couples would be aware of these principle it could definetly help their marriages.

This is a great book for couples wanting to improve their relationship. It is written by one of the most well known couple's researchers in the field. All of Gottman's strategies are backed by "what really works" in relationships - AKA: RESEARCH!! (Not just someone's opinion). I would not recommend this book for gay or lesbian couples however. It is quite biased towards heterosexual relationships.

Clear explanations for those of us who do not read much, but need help with our marriages. The first 2 chapters you feel doomed, but keep reading... you will feel there is hope! Quizzes and questions are especially helpful. Our marriage counselor highly recommended this book and made it our "homework". If the 2 of you work at it, you can really save your marriage. Between this book and counseling, we have become successful.

The Seven Principles has many terrific exercises in it that can be used by couples who would like to get to know each other better no matter how long they have known each other or have been married to each other. Sometimes, especially when couples become parents, they can lose the gift of gab with each other and the exercises can encourage conversation on many different topics all of which can only grow a relationship. I used this in a workshop with married couples and just using one question prompted much healthy conversation. Well worth the cost.

I like the format of the book and the fact than rather just reading and getting advise from it, you actually work through the exercises. My husband and I both have a copy and are doing each exercise together. The book was recommended by our counselor. We believe we saw a weekend workshop on television a long time ago using these techniques and found it very interesting. It is helpful in understanding yourself and your spouse.

This book offers PRACTICAL advice for couples in any stage of their lives. Great for engaged couples and folks who have been married many years. Gottman's work is supported by years of research and therefore, is based on what really works in successful relationships.
