Ever since he was put through the machinations of the music industry during his stints in the Box Tops and Big Star, Alex Chilton has taken a devil-may-care attitude toward his solo career. After Big Star's dissolution in the mid-'70s, Chilton toured when he wanted and put out albums whose content veered between obscure covers and eclectic originals. Inspired by a gig he played at New York City's Coney Island High in February 1999, Chilton went into Sear Sound for one impressive all-night session titled SET. The combined spontaneity and one-take approach resulted in a loose and laid-back reading of R&B and country nuggets along with a trio of jazzy numbers. Backed by bassist Ron Easley and drummer Richard Dworkin, the high priest of pop applies his weathered rasp and crackling guitar to material normally associated with Brenton Wood, Ollie Nightingale, Johnny "Guitar" Watson, and Gary Stewart. Although the names may be unfamiliar, Chilton's heartfelt delivery makes this a moot point as this session recalls the Memphis and Muscle Shoals soul sides of the late '60s and early '70s.
Editorial Reviews 3 stars out of 5 - ...On this night, Chilton delivered one of his most committed performances in years....his enthusiasm makes it work....He has found success by being goverened less by his talents than by his quirky taste. Rolling Stone (04/13/2000)
...Chilton has finally come full circle, back to the soulful material of his youth....The arrangements are so lean you'll have to mentally add silky, Temptations-like background vocals every now and then... Magnet (06/01/2000)
...a party record, a bunch of cover versions served up bar-band style - a mix of R&B and Tin Pan Alley, but well-chosen....the guitar playing...is a wonderful mixture of lead and rhythm... No Depression (03/01/2000)
