Great Series, Though Somewhat Confusing
Lain is very different from your run-of-the-mill anime series. Instead of focusing on the tired formula of monster-slaying, Lain revolves around a more philosophical theme involving one's identity. It makes you think -which can be either a pro or a con depending on if you enjoy thinking. It's a short series -only thirteen episodes, I think -but it's definitely worth looking at. My one complaint was that it leaves you very confused at the end, without a definite conclusion and leaving many questions open-but then, that's part of the odd atmosphere of the series. If you're looking for something unusual, thought-provoking, and a little odd, Lain is probably a good choice. :)
