| Movie Description Beloved television cult director Joss Whedon (BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, ANGEL) makes a spectacular first foray onto the big screen with SERENITY, the cinematic adaptation of his wildly popular but short-lived sci-fi series, FIREFLY. A mix of space western, comedy, and drama, SERENITY follows captain Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and his ragtag crew as they trade their way around the edges of civilized society. Of particular interest are two passengers they take on, Simon and River Tam (Sean Maher, Summer Glau), a brother and his telepathic sister on the run from the corrupt governing Alliance. As notorious former members of the anti-Alliance opposition, Mal and his crew make it difficult for Simon and River to stay hidden. Everything goes completely awry when a government assassin is sent to retrieve River. As Mal is forced to choose between his close-knit crew and the brother and sister newcomers, it becomes apparent that River harbors both a dangerous secret and astounding fighting powers, and Mal decides that discovering the truth about what she knows might just be worth his time. Many of the film's action sequences revolve around Summer Glau's martial arts skills in her portrayal of River. Glau prepared for her role with Hong Kong stuntwoman Ming Lu, as well as stunt coordinators Chad Stahelski and Hiro Koda, and as a resulted performed nearly all the stuntwork herself. In addition to the stellar stunts, realistic graphics, and an often haunting score, the film's actors display a rare chemistry that brings viewers both into their lives and into a possible version of humanity's future.

Top Reviews  Give the Fans What They WantReview created: 08/21/07 by:  13 of 13 people found this review helpful. Joss Whedon is notorious both knowing his fans and knowing how to please them. Unlike some stars, Whedon knows where he bread is buttered and consistently makes every effort to please the people who keep him in business. Thus is a the case with "Firefly." When the show was canceled, Whedon promised the fans to fight tooth and nail for some kind of revival. Nor were they empty promises, either. Though new episodes of "Firefly" will likely never see a television screen again, Whedon delivered "Serenity," a quality piece that continued, and in many ways concluded, the "Firefly" story. Now, Whedon is out to please fans again with this extras-laden edition of "Serenity." Many fans were obviously disappointed with the bare-bones DVD that was previously released, and Whedon answered the call with this stunning re-release that includes (gasp!) a cast and director commentary. In short, anyone who loves "Firefly" owes it to themselves and Joss Whedon to add this gem to their collection. Thanks for reading. The series was canceled due to poor programming choices and timeslot moving, as usual. The actors worked well together, it just seemed right. If you haven't seen the series, "Firefly" yet then I suggest you take a look at it. The movie picked up where the series was forced to end. It fills in some of the blanks and makes you want to see a Serenity PART 2. Josh Wheddon if you ever read any of this, please consider it. Thanks a very loyal Serenity fan. If you are unfamiliar with the too short lived series, you got a quick in debth introduction, during the action, then the movie went into high gear. Its a shame this series didnt last a few seasons like his other series did, it wouldve been an excellent storyline to follow each week! The movie makes up for the abrupt ending of the series. Very well written. Very well acted, the Actors were very familiar with thier characters, and they made the movie work so well. I hope they are able to make another, but then, Serenity kinda leaves the viewer with no doubt as to where the characters are headed, which is nice in itself. We "miss" Y'all. Joss Whedon and this great cast make you care about these characters. If you like SciFi and/or Westerns this is a must see..which will lead to a must own. I own the Firefly boxed set and both the original and Special Edition of Serenity...so I can loan them out an make new converts. Its the kind of thing you will want to watch over and over again.
