An excellent add-on for a GREAT system
Review created: 10/11/07(updated 07/30/08)
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Yes, you do want this. One of the BEST systems ever produced to play 2D games the we now call "CLASSIC GAMING".

It will play expanded or enhanced versions of games you already like from the Sega Genesis such as Shadow Of The Beast II, Chuck Rock & Chuck Rock II, Flashback; Quest For Identity, B.C. Racers, Radical Rex, Hook, Mickey Mania & Wolfchild.

But it also has a few gems only available on the Sega CD such as Sonic CD, Wild Woody, Snatcher and Wonderdog. Also worth noting are the Lunar series games originally released only for the Sega CD. Both Lunar: The Silver Star and Lunar: Eternal Blue are prized games for this system (look them up! These are excellent RPG's) as both have deep stories, excellent gameplay and great visuals among their peers.

A couple of my favorites for the Sega CD expansion are Shadow Of The Beast II, Sonic CD, Wonderdog, Shining Force CD, VAY, Popful Mail, both Lunar games, Keio Flying Squadron, Lords Of Thunder, Robo Aleste and Slipheed.

There are games to avoid such as the games that rely on a button push at an exact time during a FMV (full motion video) sequence, or games that rely almost entirely on FMV.
These games include Dragon's Lair, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, The Lawnmower Man, Loadstar: Legend Of Tully Bodine, Microcosm, Revenge Of The Ninja, Road Avenger, Sewer Shark, Space Ace, Star Wars - Rebel Assault and Time Gal.
These types of games, while interesting at first, seem to lack game play value and are usually frowned upon by gamers. Night Trap and Switch/Panic! are 2 more games that should be added to the DO NOT BUY list even though they may have value for a collector - Night Trap is famous! but the game still stinks.

Games such as these, in the end, gave the Sega CD unit a bad reputation. Sega was quick to move on to the next CD based game system, the Sega Saturn, which cut short the life of the Sega CD unit.

To play 32X disks you will need this unit and the 32X expansion module attached to your Sega Genesis but 32X disk games are rare and very few titles were ever produced. Of those that were produced, none are of any particular interest.

There are two versions of the Sega CD unit. The model 1 attaches under your Genesis unit and has a motorized disk tray and can be used with the Sega Genesis model 1. The model 2 attaches to the right side of your Genesis and has a flip up door panel to put Sega CD media in and out of the unit. The Sega CD model 2 can be used with the Sega Genesis model 1 and 2.

The Sega CD has some internal memory built in for saving games, but not much. You can buy a memory card that inserts into your Genesis cartridge slot. These are rare but for some games, such as Shining Force CD, are necessary to access all hidden levels in the game.

BOTTOM LINE:
This is the only way to play some great classics, several games ported to the Sega CD from the Genesis were expanded or enhanced. Avoid the duds and you will love this expansion. The Sonic CD game may be the best 2D Sonic game ever produced. Graphics and sound on Sega CD games much improved over the Genesis alone.

A System Ahead of its Time
Review created: 07/24/06
14 of 21 people found this review helpful.

I realize that this system is older and the quality isn't as superb as today's is. Let's face the facts, though; for a system that was released many years ago, this was revolutionary. The idea of using discs was something only heard of in the PC realm and Sega busted out with a whole console for this type of technology. It didn't get the fame and attention it deserved, nor did it last. It seemingly floundered, in my opinion, in the market. However, this system was unique and I feel it revolutionized much of what gaming is today. If you're looking at this system, it's clearly because you are a collector or someone who enjoys the vintage years of gaming. This system isn't going to blow you out of the water, but it won't let you down. It has a lot of interesting and entertaining titles. Collectors and fans of vintage gaming should definitely get their paws on this system.

I think this system is great if you want something different to play; quite fun. Games are very similar to the genesis, but with better graphics. Also, a lot of the games are more like interactive movies than games. It is a very old school console; one of the very first CD based consoles. Unlike the 3DO console that came out using CDs, this is actually fun, rather than rip off interactive movies. Although some of the games are actually kind of like this, if you can find the right games for it, then this can be a great system. One game I recommend is Sonic 3D Blast, which is arguably one of the best Sonic games. I would recommend this system if you want something different, or if you're a collecter.

SEGA CD Things you Need to Know & a (RPG) Review.?
Review created: 08/20/07(updated 09/17/07)
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

1st lets be sure you know what your buying & what you need.
There were 2 versions of the Sega CD add on system.
And depending on your genesis you will want to get the CD system that is compatible with it.

To See if you have the 1st or 2nd genesis,
If the system has a white reset button its a Genesis(1)
If it doesnt its a genesis(2) <black reset button
Genesis(3) system isnt compatible with the sega CD add on at all. This system is clearly marked genesis3 on the consoles face.(top)

The early 1st version of the CD system sets below the genesis(the one pictured at the top of the page)
NOTE the 1st version of sega CD isnt compatable with the genesis2
The 2nd version of the sega CD add on sets to the right hand side of the genesis and can be used on either system.
NOTE The 2nd Version of the sega CD must use an adaptor to be used with the Genesis(1)
The adaptor was included with the CD add on when it was new, But if you plan on getting the 2nd version of the sega CD & have a genesis(1) be sure to ask to see if this part is included, *as many of the adaptors have been lost over the years.
If you have the genesis(1) also ask if the (sound mixing) wire is included in the auction. This is a wire that ran from the back or the CD unit to the headphone jack on the front of the Genesis(1) These are "very often" left out of auctions.(see * ) And you will not get all the sound from both the
genesis(1) & the sega CD without it.
The 2nd CD add on was a bit more durable I'd recomend that one if you plan on playing it alot.
Don't overlook You will Need a Sega CD Memory Card.
Ok now you know what you need to know.)
If This information was helpful Please rate this review(Yes) so it will may be seen by more people.

On with the review
I look at the Sega CD add on as an item mostly for hardcore gamers & RPG fans.
The system was "ahead of its time" with cd storage capacity & the ability to run (FMV)<full motion video.
There are some drawbacks that came along with the newer technology as well, like the need for a memory card to save games & load times during the games.
Those are the weak points for the system the load times are from pretty fast (10seconds) to excessively long(1 minute or longer) due to the single speed cd rom drive.
The need for a memory card to save games is really more accepted now days, but the Sega CD memory cards are kinda rare & pricey, often costing close to or more as than the system itself.
Do not try getting by cheap by leaving the system on for days at a time, the durability of the system isnt great to begin with & the system is old.
Leaving it on for a few days would likely kill the CD system & may even cause damage to the genesis system its hooked to.

Ive owned most every game for the system & feel the system lacked in that sense as well.
Sega & Working Designs seem to be the only companies who put out High quality software for the system.
Sonic CD is by many known to be the Best Sonic game, but i cant recomend buying the system for anything other than the RPG's since other genres may only have one or two title(s) worth playing on the system.
Sega CD RPGs Lunar, Lunar 2, Vai, Dark Wizard & Shining Force CD to name most of them. <Great Games!
There were other ok titles for the system & a few non RPG good titles, like Sonic, Third World War & sega arcade classics.
Many of the games were weak sports titles, bad ports of 3DO games & grainy FMV titles.

Thank you for Your Time & Have Fun.

  Great Console, Great Memories
Review created: 08/05/07

Some of my best childhood gaming memories were made on a Sega CD playing Sewer Shark with my father. My 32X has since burnt out, the CD along with it, but the Sega CD remains one of my favorite consoles. Games are a little difficult to come by, and good luck getting it serviced anywhere, but if you passionate about games you won't be disappointed by the Sega CD.

A must have for collectors and oldschool gamers...

The Sega CD is great, and a must-have for any console or video game collector. These days, it is a rarity and for its time, it was very under appreciated. It's only real downfall is a lack of really groundbreaking titles, or even a wide variety for that matter, but still worth a look if you feel like remembering the good ol' days of gaming.

The Beginning of the End for SEGA
Review created: 12/30/06(updated 12/30/06)
2 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I really loved Sega, I couldn't stand the childish and outright insulting design of Nintendo's systems and games. I had the Sega Master System and loved it, I didn't have to do all the ridiculous things I saw my friends doing with their Nintendo like licking the carts and blowing inside the console, I want to play the system not have a physical relationship with it! Then I saw the commercial that really wowed me... the X-Mas spot for Altered Beast for the Genesis! Woah what colors! What effects! This is the ultimate! Long live Sega...

...let's jump ahead a little past all the endless fun with the Genesis and one day I see they have this CD Expansion out. Of course being the Segaite I was I jumped right on it when it came out.

Mother...
Of...
God...

What in blazes where they thinking? The hardware wasn't beefy enough to keep the software running smoothly, and the game content was completly sub-par of wha Sega was noted for.

The games were outright horrible, the load times were spirit crushing because the hardware wasn't up to the task of buffering all the endless stock footage Sega crammed into almost every CD game they put out. All the sports ones were just the same ones they had been releasing with a ton of cutscenes added in.

Then there were all the linear plot ones based off of Dragon's Lair which don't get me wrong was a neat game and it opened the door to where graphics could go in the gaming industry but come on, how many Dragon's Lair clones can you play before you completely bored?

All in all the CD Expansion was nothing more than a glorified pre-DVD player, you watched most of the games instead of playing them.

I highly advise that you skip this if you're looking to revisit the Sega experience and pretend this item doesn't exist. It is undoubtedly the spark that lit the fire that eventually engulfed Sega and allowed us to be tormented by more of Nintendo's ridiculous games until Sony rescued the world with the PS.

My First And Last Ebay Purchase

sellkie ( -1 )
2 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I really wanted a Sega CD system and only heard good things about EBay. Sure, there were some bad but that is expected. I'm not into bidding and spending my time getting "the best price" I only wanted to find a "buy now" item that was within my price range. Sure enough, I found it on EBay. I found A seller with a "great" reputation and figured, "What could go wrong"? Well, I found out. I got the item missing a power cord he said was included. That was in September. It is now almost the end of November and after filling a claim with Paypal I still don't have my money back. It has been 2 months of nonsense dealling with a total idiot of a seller. I paid him fast and did nothing wrong but since I posted negative feedback on him for an awful transaction he posted feedback on me that said, "I am bad user and to avoid me". I can't believe EBay lets this stuff happen and then pushes it off to paypal to deal with it. Please don't ever send me an email ever again asking me how things went when you never really cared to deal with my problem in the first place.
I dealt with a seller of "impecable" feedback who turned into a malicious liar. Then the seller had the balls to ask to have a mutual withdrawl of feedback since "we settled" the issue. It has been almost 3 weeks since he said he would refund my money in my claim on Paypal. I sent him the item back in "impecable' condition and sent it back in better packing than he sent it to me. He sent me an email saying "Thanks for sending it back in such good condition" but has yet to tell paypal to give me my money.
In my opinion EBay supports theives and liars and I will NEVER use EBay again based on my awful expirience and the awful handling of the issue by both Ebay and paypal.
And by the way, the item you asked me to comment is not even the item the item I purchased. Get your crap together ELay and at least get the item people purchase on your crap system correct. In my opinion.....If you want to lose your money and want an endless hastle......you can find it on EBay, after all, I did.

I would recomend the first model to anyone buying one because it handles games better that its predecessors and it is also cooler. Sonic cd is a must have game to go with it. Peace

who can ever forget sewer shark! This add on was really fun in the sense that it tried to capture real time fmv and incorporate it into gameplay, but it was way spendy back in the day.

if you still own a genesis, try to find one of these and a couple of titles and have a sweet throwback gaming session.

This system rocks. First off, I didn't care for the full motion video games. But the rest are stellar. "Eternal Champions" on Sega CD was a classic. Leaps and bounds better than the genesis version. "Snatcher" another great game, can only be found on this system and was created by the guy who did metal gear. There are many others to list but rest assured that many great games lived and died on this system.

Its a classic add-on to the Sega Genesis. It may by old, but it has some great (some unknown) games including Sonic CD, Switch: Panic!, NBA Jam, and for the older players, Night Trap! A must for any genesis fan, collector, or classic game player. Get the model 1 Sega CD (sits under the genesis)because it is more reliable and is more compatible with some games.

Trivia: The Sega CD was the best selling add-on for a game system ever, even though Sega thought it did horrible!

If you want to play Sega Cd games this is the best way
Review created: 10/07/09

I've owned and repaired a few of the model 2 Sega CD units. I love them! This si definitely the most cost effective way to go about playing Sega CD games. I've got several rare consoles that play Sega CD games but they all come with their pros and cons.

The Sega CDX savesa ton of space and only needs one plug but it's quite expensive.

The Laseractive with the Sega PAC it's very cool but the Laseractive is rare and costly as is the Sega PAC. Also it uses a slide out disc tray and I'm not a fan of those.

The JVC X'Eye is another great alternative but again it's pretty expensive and rare to come by. But it takes just one plug and has a flip open disc tray.

The Model 1 Sega CD is one probably the coolest looking one. But they cost quite a bit here on ebay and often come with problems. On top of the fuse issue they have slide out trays and are nearing 20 years old. Motors wear out and that's just one more component to crap out on ya.

Then lastly the Model 2 Sega CD. By far the most common model around. I love the flip top disc tray. These babies have their problems too...its common for a fuse to blow on them from using the wrong power supply. But it's a very easy fix if you can use a phillips screw driver and can use a soldering iron you can fix it for about $5. Even if you've never soldered before you can probably tackle this project. It was the first thing I ever soldered and it worked beautifully.

So if you find yourself wanting to play Sega Cd games and you've got a Model 2 Genesis...go ahead and pick one of these bad boys up. If you see a broke one that doesn't power up there's a better than 90% chance a quick fuse fix will take care of the problem. I highly recommend the Model 2 Sega CD.

  Doesn't Power on =/= Doesn't Work
Review created: 09/20/09
by:
orly8739 ( 8 )

Well folks, It's a Sega CD, simple as that, its a great system to get, but only if you can get it for cheap. Normally, the Model 2 Sega CD are a lot easier to find, are a bit more durable, and tend to run a bit cheaper. So why buy a Model 1 Sega CD you ask? In short, because it looks a lot cooler.

Also, for the first time Sega CD buyers out there, ALWAYS go for the Sega CDs marked "Does not power on". I cannot stress this following statement enough, 99% of the time, the reason the Sega CD doesn't turn on is because it BLEW A FUSE BECAUSE THE OWNER USED A NINTENDO POWER ADAPTER. The Nintendo power adapter may fit inside the Sega CDs power slot, but it outputs power differently, causing the Sega CD to pop a fuse for safety. It's an extremely simple fix for anyone with a paperclip and some electrical tape, or anyone with a little soldering know-how, fix the fuse and BAM! You've got a perfectly working Sega CD for pennies. I've seen Sega CDs go for hundreds, but with this fix, you can buy a Sega CD for a fraction of the cost.

So the morals of this story are:

1) Never, ever use a Nintendo power adapter in a Sega product, and
2) Buy the Sega CDs that don't power on to save a lot of $$$

Review created: 08/19/09

This is a great product! But it can be expensive! I'm glad I found http://gifts.freebiejeebies.co.uk/109432 where I got mine for free :)

All I did was sign up and then completed ONE offer. I recommend the Intuit 30 day FREE trial ,OR the Seattle Coffeeoffer as it is FREE to complete and takes a few minutes!

There are many alternative offers you can complete such as the King.com offer where you have play through $5. There is a chance you will win your money back anyway!

There are many other gadgets I can get for free this way, such as consoles, iPhones, iPods, Plasma TV's and the list goes on

Visit: http://gifts.freebiejeebies.co.uk/109432

before you think about putting your hands into your pocket for this gadget.

The site can afford to send out these "free" gifts because you have to complete an offer first. They get paid commission when me and you do so, which is used to buy the gift with money left over as profit for them!

I hope you enjoy the extra $$$'s saved in your bank account from using http://gifts.freebiejeebies.co.uk/109432 :)

One of the best game console manufacturers, Sega gives you the opprotunity to play CD's on the Genesis. The Segs CD is a good add-on if your in to classic video game consoles from the past. The Sega CD has a great library of games for any genre. I've always wanted one when they first came out in 93 and now I own one.

Just take a couple of minutes and read this. This is very EASY to do! It literally
takes 10 minutes to setup. Simply follow the steps below. I promise you,
this is 100% real. I will answer you on any question! Here is what you
do. Click on the link below, register, pick an account type (referral is
the easiest) and complete just 1 offer (Very important that you complete
the 1 offer otherwise your account will sit in limbo until you do). This
is not like other sites where you need to complete one offer on 2 or 3
different pages!!! And a lot of these offers are FREE trials with
nothing else to buy...No commitments!!!

There are plenty of cool offers to choose from such as Blockbuster
online, Stamp.com, Netflix, Gamefly which are services you would
regularly sign up for anyways and their all secure networks, why not use
them to get a free PS3 System or cash (I did the Stamps.com for a 30 day
free trial and it never cost me a penny and I received credit for it the
same day). Look at the offers and choose the one that works for you.
After signing up and completing your one offer, simply refer 8-13 people
(depending on the FREE prize you choose) to do the same under your link
(just post the same thing as I have on eBay, and you'll get your
referrals before the auction even ends.)

Then they will ship your PS3 System or your selected item for free, I
chose the PS3 80gb System. No Joke, 100% REAL!!! The reason these
companies make money, is because most people don't bother getting all
the referrals. All you have to do is post it ! They use us as
advertisement by word of mouth which saves them tons of money which goes
toward yours and my free gift. These are legit companies such as
Blockbuster, Netflix, Gamefly etc... You can copy my listing if you
want. You must use your own authentic link though. You will get your own
personal link after your orders placed.

Step 1: Click this link:http://www.YourPS34free.com/index.php?ref=5586712

Step 2: Sign up and chose an account type (Referral is the easiest and
best).

Step 3: Complete just 1 offer (like Blockbuster or Stamps.com) and refer
up to 13 people to do the same (use eBay OR FORUMS)

Step 4: Receive your PS3 System for FREE!!!!!!!!!! (Even The Shipping Is
Free!!!)
