Album Notes
Korn: Jonathan Davis (vocals); Munky (guitar); Fieldy (bass guitar); David Silviera (drums).
Recording information: Henson Recording Studios, Hollywood, California (2005).
This 2005 album is not only Korn's initial outing for a new label (Virgin), it marks the veteran nu-metal act's first record without founding guitarist Brian "Head" Welch (who left the band after becoming a born-again Christian). Changes for the California group don't stop there--SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE is largely produced by the Matrix, the team best known for providing a slick sheen on songs by Avril Lavigne and Liz Phair. Given all of these transitions, it's not surprising that this record seems notably different than past Korn offerings, with an industrial element both streamlining the quartet's sound and giving it more weight. Although guitar and bass are still prominent on these heavy tracks, greater attention is given to Jonathan Davis's vocals, which are unusually melodic at times (particularly on "Politics" and "For No One"), and David Silviera's punishing work on the drum kit. The result is an unapologetically direct album by a revamped band that seeks to stay true to its past while looking ahead.

New Band, New Sound, Great Record

Head left the band, and Korn promised a total reinvention of who they are and what they'll sound like. Typical hype from just about every band, right? Wrong. For once, the record lived up to the hype. From the opening track, "Twisted Transistor", to the haunting closer, "Tearjerker", this album is a rock rollercoaster. Korn have officially shed the tired and watered down nu-metal sound they helped pioneer, and have instead focused on creating something entirely new. The album is definitely more a straight-forward hard rock record, but that shouldn't be looked upon negatively at all. There are still many tunes that rock, and rock like only Korn know how to do.

If you're looking for tunes that really define Korn's new sound, I would suggest checking out "10 Or A 2-Way", "Throw Me Away", or "Seen It All". If you're looking for some songs in the vein of classic Korn, then definitely check out songs like "Liar", "For No One", and "Hypocrites".

Korn's record label touted this CD as "the evolution of HEAVY", and while many will agree its not as balls outright heavy as prior Korn works, this is still a CD with some heavy songs on there, while showcasing a brand new side of Korn that most of us didn't know they had. They've unleashed some very heavily industrial tinged songs, as well as some great mainstream rock tracks.

Overall you'll be hard pressed to find anything wrong with this CD! If you purchase the deluxe edition, you're treated to a second disc containing 2 live videos, a couple remixes, and 3 extra tracks that didn't make the album's final cut - "Eaten Up Inside", "Last Legal Drug" (a track very reminiscent of Marilyn Manson), and the insanely heavy and double bass (yes, double bass) loaded "It's Me Again".

If you enjoy Korn's newer sound, this is the album for you. If you were growing tired of the boring nu-metal sound, this is the album for you.

Out of a 5 point scale, I would definitely give it a 5!
