Publisher's Note HONOR, serving as your brother's keeper, getting back on the right path after having swayed -- these are just a few of the values that Beaver embodies as he tries to create a decent life for himself and his brother following his mother's death and his own stint in prison. Younger brother Cande, a teenager who has been left to fend for himself, has been abused by his father while big brother Beaver served time in the state penitentiary. When Beaver returns to the old barrio, various neighbors and friends pitch in to help him and Cande make lives for themselves. But some of the old pitfalls are still present as is the very danger of their abusive father.
Industry Reviews Gr 6-9 ``Beaver'' Francisco Torres, 21, is paroled after serving 3 years of a 10-year sentence for being an accomplice in an armed robbery. His assignment as a pastry chef in the prison kitchen allowed him to work the system with food favors and offered some protection from the realities of prison. Beaver returns to West Dallas where he must find a job; help his younger brother, Cande; and readjust to life on the outside. Beaver is a basically good kid who has gotten in with bad friends and his luck had taken a down turn. It does not stop with his release: a friend is killed in a car accident and Cande is seriously injured. More problems than can be imagined are heaped on the young man, but he seems prepared to get his life back in order and overcome them. Major issues are treated with sensitivity and understanding. Several good adult role models are introduced and are well developed. A solid offering. Kenneth E. Kowen, E.L. Furr Senior High School, Houston, TX Lopate
