Why couldn't Uncle Garth and Uncle Hub have been my Uncles? Michael Caine and Robert Duvall play the greatest cranky old guys with soft hearts.
The tales of Hub and Garth are fantastic.
I'm sorry to say but I think this was the last of the cuteness of Haley Joel Osment. He was very cute in this movie but definitely has come of age.
Also starring are Kyra Sedgwick, Josh Lucas and Eric Balfour.

This is a great family movie. As a mother of 5 I highly recommend it for your children.

How can you miss with this cast: Robert Duvall, Michael Caine and Haley Joel Osment(I see dead people)?

Walter (played by Haley) is sent by his mother to live with his uncles (Robert Duvall and Michael Caine) to find the family treasure. Mom is not going to win any "Mother of the Year" contest.

You feel like you are living out young Walter's adventures as he finds out about life, love and family. It is told from the perspective of an older Walter telling his story.

Duvall and Caine are charming and hilarious as the eccentric old coots.

If you want a heartwarming uplifting movie, this is it! You won't be sorry!

This movie was so much fun to watch. I don't have any problem letting my children watch this movie, there is no bad language or questionable scenes.

The two uncles (Caine & Duvall) are so hilarious, trying to be grouchy when really they are warm hearted old men!

When the nephew stays for the summer he learns to come out of his shell live. He is mesmerized with the stories of the the two uncles pasts and he learns to believe in something other than reality. In the process the uncles learn to open their hearts to the boy and they become a happy family.

Excellent show. Let you children watch it!

This movie appeals to people of any age. My children loved the movie because of the lion, but they thought the two uncles were funny. Adults relate to the family situations. There film offers humor and yet it made me cry. I recommend it to young and old--female or male.

Funny, warm, sweet, fun..Everything I like in a movie!

This movie really grabbed my attention from the very beginning. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen , which is unusual for me. I usually am multi-tasking during any pay per view show or on T.V. movie. Not this time! I not only watched it once but watched it again right away to make sure I din't miss a moment!

The kid is cute and the uncles are crazy (One calls salesmen to visit so his brother can sit on the porch and shoot at them because "every man needs a hobby" or some such thing).

The mom is a floozy, the relatives are money mongers and the stories the uncles tell the kid seem way too out there to be possible....or are they?

The kid adjusts to the his great uncles ("You bought a USED lion?") and finally sees that his best chance at a normal life is with these old codgers.

He is not a bit surprised how the nearly hundred year old uncles finally meet their demise 30 or so years later.

The C.D. has tons of extra information that is so interesting as well as out takes and the writer's perspective.

Best $2.00 I ever spent at a yard sale!!

Awww, come on, give me a YES below!

This movie is a warm-hearted tale no one should miss!

This film is one of the most delightful movies I have had the pleasure of seeing in many years. It is a story of a young boy, Walter, (played by Haley Joe Osment)who is left with his eccentric uncles and a lion in Texas in the 1950's.
Michael Caines’ character tells the young by of the incredible adventures and feats the young boys uncles have experienced through the years. The boy is curious as to whether the tales are true, as did I as they get more incredulous, as he hears more of the tales related to him. This film has humor, drama and is a warm-hearted tale no one should miss.

Wonderful movie for the whole family! A must-have for your collection! We rented first, but enjoyed it so much we had to buy it.
Robert Duvall and Michael Caine are at their best as cranky old men who resent growing old and being left behind by society. They take in a young relative and learn to love, and be loved once again. You'll smile, chuckle, and occasionally laugh throughout the movie.
A great family movie that reminded me of "The Princess Bride".

A fantastic adventure of great and original proportions. The chemistry between Duvall and Caine is splendid and Haley Joel Osment proves he can act after he lost his baby teeth. A wonderful story and must see coming-of-age film.

If you're looking for a family movie with great values that will make you laugh and cry, this is it! All the actors give strong performances in this very entertaining movie. The writer/director modelled this movie after the old classics they still show over and over today. This will probably join them as a "new" classic. The DVD couldn't be more loaded with extras, including cut and alternate scenes, the original completely different ending, behind the scenes on the set, the 10 year journey to get the screenplay made into this wonderful movie, and much more. Highly recommended!

  Great Family Entertainment~Extremely Funny Movie~Worth-
Review created: 03/09/08(updated 05/18/08)

Great Family Entertainment~Extremely Funny Movie~Worth watching more than once. This movie is a throw-back in time, to the 50's era.
Josh Lucas (of "A Beautiful Mind") gets a phone call telling that his two great-uncles have been in an accident. Young Haley Joel Osment is literally dropped off with great-uncles Michael Caine and Robert Duvall by his mother Kyra Sedgwick. The two are supposed to have a huge fortune somewhere on their farm in Texas and Sedgwick, along with several others, have been trying to find the treasure for years. Osment seems out-of-place at first and his two uncles appear to be cold-hearted. Duvall is seen sleep-walking and acts like he is sword-fighting. Osment has never seen anyone act this way before and he becomes curious. He finds a photo of the beautiful and exotic Emmanuelle Vaugier in the house's tower and his want to know the pasts of his uncles'. Caine tells Osment at the start of World War I the two uncles joined the French Legion, fighting with the Allies. Caine tells of Duvall's love for Vaugier when he was a young man. She was also wanted by an evil sheik (Adam Ozturk) The story concludes and Osment finds out how the two got their money. "Secondhand Lions" -an old lion that Duvall and Caine buy-is one of those movies that makes you wonder why hollywood does not produce more like it. Give this one "Two Thumbs Up"
Five Stars *****

Wonderful movie. A young boy could embrace the wisdom of two elderly gents. I loved the obvious age difference and yet both found out elderly and youth can meet at the middle of the road.

This delightful comedy deserves more than one look. After seeing it at the cinema, I wanted a copy to share with friends. Michael Caine & Robert Duval, eccentric old men, provide a puzzling environment for their young nephew.
Fun for any age.

This is one of those movies that has comedy, drama, action, and tear jerking. You'll see this young boy who has been tossed back in forth by his mother and then ends up with these elderly great-uncles who are very strange to say the least. You'll see a loving relationship develop between the boy and his uncles.

Had seen this movie on a bus trip, and found it to be a clean, decent one. Ordered , and the it took 13 days to receive it.
When it arrived there was a note included that stated they could not find the one which was ordered, and included a discount (cash) because the one they sent was scratched. I played it and found it to be O. K. I would have preferred the chance to make a choice as to whether I wated to purchase, or not. VCN.

This is a touching and funny movie about a young boy - Hayley Joel Osmond -coming of age and learning life's experiences from his two uncles - Robert Duvall and Michael Caine. Not by choice did he come to live with them, but by choice does he stay with them in the end. I cried and laughed and had a wonderful time watching this movie! I don't buy many DVD's - but I bought this one!

Walter(Haley Joes Osment)is left for the summer at his uncles' farm by his flighty mother to search for the "supposed" treasure they have hidden while she goes off to school. During his time on the farm (Robert Duvall and Michael Caine)he not only encounters adventure through reliving the tales of his uncles' past but also through many unusual choices they make like purchasing a lion through the mail. I bought this movie because it was not only funny and lighthearted but also very personal and insightful. The movie made me feel as if I was right there with Walter experiencing how he felt now knowing what life is like when someone cares enough to speak truth to you and to love you through all of life's adventures.

This is an excellent film. Kinna' sad when a great one like this comes along and you hear little about it but you are inundated with media over-hype on movies that turn out to be total crap. If you haven't seen it, watch it, you will not be disappointed!

A nice family oriented film that caters to all age groups with a nice mix of drama, comedy and intrigue. Haley Joel Osment perorms well with great uncles Michael Caine and Robert Duvall as he gets left behind by his lousy mother Kyra Sedgwick in the 1960s who wants him to seek out their hidden fortune for herself. A cold and unfeeling start for Osment eventually warms into an embrassing relationship that he does not want to relinquish. Caine tells stories of Duvall's former years, but are these just stories, or true reality?
