On their debut EP, IN SEARCH OF MANNY, Luscious Jackson play the parts of Beastie Girls with mischievous relish. Conceptualists/songwriters Jill Cunniff and Gabby Glaser come up with a mish-mash of minimalist instrumentation, adventurous sampling and funky beats that sometimes recalls the low-fi offspring of CHECK YOUR HEAD and PAUL'S BOUTIQUE, but has feminine bravado and charms all its own.
The vocals that grace these sample-heavy songs evoke Blondie's "Rapture," conveying that song's sultry confidence. Highlights here include "Let Yourself Get Down," an invitation to boogie, and "Satellite," a spoofy nod to C&W that morphs into a soul/jazz groove. "Life of Leisure" is the highlight, however, complete with looped big-band jazz samples and the same hypnotic chorus-style that Luscious Jackson would later employ in the hit "Naked Eye." IN SEARCH OF MANNY is a superb first record.
