Album Notes
Yamash'ta is a little-known light on the space-music horizon, despite a background that includes stints with Klaus Schulze, Michael Shrieve, and Steve Winwood-all of whom were involved in his Go project. A master Asian percussionist and synth player, Yamash'ta's credit is long due. The uninitiated can start by giving this intoxicating disc a listen.
SEA AND SKY is electronic music in the classic vein of the Teutonic pioneers (Schulze, TD, etc), featuring eight long tracks of simmering, shimmering, and glistening synth atmospheres and brightly shifting tones. Filled with a sense of drama and exploration, SEA AND SKY would no doubt make perfect planetarium music. Yet Yamash'ta is far too gifted a composer to allow his music to function as wallpaper. Track titles tell a story ("A Photon," "Appeared," "And," "Touched!," etc.) as glimpsed through a kaleidoscope of electronic phases, particles, and perfumes. The album's often exultant sounds call to mind some of Kitaro's early works, though Yamash'ta's music doesn't engage in rank sentimentality. The guy played with Schulze, if that isn't approbation enough. He certainly knows what he's doing.
