It replaces two smaller books I have. excellent book..
Review created: 03/01/09

I had been searching for this book for some time. They had it. I saw it and I bought it.

The book covers scrimshaw from illustration, to product, to base instruction. I used to scrimshaw years ago and I want to do it again, and this book will do a great deal to get me started.

Not a bad book. It goes into more of the how-to aspect than I expected. I was expecting a larger list of scrimshanders but it seemed this book was more focused on a few. Good book to have in the library.

  SCRIMSHAW: A COMPLETE(ly) ILLUSTRATED MANUAL
Review created: 05/19/08
by:

If you're looking for an engaging coffee table book, or simply a collection of beautiful examples of scrimshaw, then this is the book for you. However lovely it may be, it is light on the technical instruction(hence the more appropriate name of "Scrimshaw: A Complete[ly] Illustrated Manual". For example, the only reference to tools is a suggestion to embed a sewing needle in a piece of dowel or, alternatively, break the end off of a hobby knife blade. As a woodcarver I was hoping for more practical and useful instruction. It's possible that it would be even less helpful to folks not already familiar with the techniques used in carving, engraving, and the like.
Yet,it is indeed beautiful to the eye.
