SCRIMSHAW: A COMPLETE(ly) ILLUSTRATED MANUAL
If you're looking for an engaging coffee table book, or simply a collection of beautiful examples of scrimshaw, then this is the book for you. However lovely it may be, it is light on the technical instruction(hence the more appropriate name of "Scrimshaw: A Complete[ly] Illustrated Manual". For example, the only reference to tools is a suggestion to embed a sewing needle in a piece of dowel or, alternatively, break the end off of a hobby knife blade. As a woodcarver I was hoping for more practical and useful instruction. It's possible that it would be even less helpful to folks not already familiar with the techniques used in carving, engraving, and the like.
Yet,it is indeed beautiful to the eye.
