The Scarlet Pimpernel (DVD, 2004)

I discovered this movie with the help of a college date at the VHS rental store and fell in love with the movie, if not my date. I watched it over & over again until none of the rental stores owned a copy anymore. All of their copies were wore out or otherwise gone, and the movie was out of print. I spent years searching for the movie and learned of a bankruptcy and how the new owners of the rights to the movie had not allowed it to be re-released. Back in those days, eBay didn't exist and finding a rare, out-of-print movie was a crapshoot... How excited I was to find that the movie had finally been released on DVD!!!

This remake of The Scarlet Pimpernel actually outshines the original black & white version (which I also own & occasionally watch). Jane Seymour is particularly exceptional in her role. It amazes me that so few people seem to know this movie when it is so well produced and has such a brilliant cast!

If you've never seen this movie it is well worth buying and watching over & over again. If you've seen it, you've probably been waiting like me for your chance to add it to your movie collection!

This was an extremely good costume adventure film. The emphasis was on acting and the use of deception rather than on action, although there were some good action sequences. Anthony Andrews was born to play the pimpernel! This is a witty production in the English style. I would recommend it especially if you like Masterpiece on PBS.

Family viewing op here! Not quite tru to the book, but humerous lines and especially Anthony Andrews' facial expressions when he is not the "pimpernel" are a hoot.

Anthony Andrews is superb. Period costumes are outstanding. Dialogue is intreguing and keeps your intrest throughout the performance. A great classic, even better than the original.

This is a family movie. My three teenagers moaned when it first started, because of the language and the year. Thirty minutes later, they were involved. My daughter still quotes the lines about "those Frenchies". It has everything from fighting with swords to a love story. Everyone wins in watching this film. gk

I saw this movie some years back and fell in love with it. It's got a good cast (I really like Jane Seymour) and good action. I did own the DVD at one time, but sold it. I decided now was the time to get it again. And I still love it.

I have always loved this production. I even had the opportunity to tell Jane Seymor how much i enjoyed it when I saw her in an airport in Washington DC.

Movie is just as great as when Seen on tv. Was given as a gift and the recipient was happy. It is a great gift to give to someone who is a fan of this movie.

This is one of the best movies I have ever seen!! One of those you can quote forever and it never gets old! I had to beg my family to watch it with me but by the end they were swearing that it was their favorite movie of all time!!! Sink me!!

I watched this movie with my mom when I was younger and have loved it ever since. It has action, witty dialogue and romance. Anthony Andrews is an amazing actor and this is truely on of his best roles. Jane Seymour is lovely of course. They have great chemistry together.

This movie is great for kids and adults - It has some suspense, action, a love story, no sex and minimal violence.

this is a great historical drama where the stars are goodlooking and do a fine job! It is also completely romantic for those who love good clean romance where everything turns out in the end.

This was a great movie! My older kids liked it. For those of you who have read the book though you will find it quite different. The book is the far better story, but the movie is great in it's own right.

This is one of those timeless Classics, with good humor as well as to enhance an appreciation of our history. Fun to pull out once a year or so. We had it before as a VHS, which got lost in one of our moves. It was great to see yet again.

made for tv this is THE best of the modern versions. We see Anthony Andrews as the ever so good Sir Percy and the loveliest Marguerite ...Jane Seymour.
OUTSTANDING costumer design. Fun theme song and this is a very good move to watch. We have fun "spotting" Andrews in his next disguise. the plot is taken from El Dorado and the Origional Scarlet Pimpernel books so it is very true the orig stories. a modern classic~

Sink ME if this wasn't one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Great story line, EXCELLENT ACTING & very entertaining. Odds Fish if I wouldn't just buy it again. It's a movie that will keep you glued to the screen to the surprise ending of the story. Don't miss it! Ain't it GREAT!

Generally expect a closer adherence to the storyline of the book... but this is a tremendous improvement. Romance, Humor, Casting and Music. Highly recommend this to those who have read the book and to those just looking for an excellent (clean)movie.

Exciting, suspenseful, entertaining, inspiring...

This movie is all that and more! It tells the adventurous tale of the hero of the French Revolution, the infamous Scarlet Pimpernel. He has dedicated his life to saving aristocrats who would otherwise go to the guilloutine. But throughout the movie, the Pimpernel is being sought after--by the sly and evil Chauvelin. And caught in the middle, is the Scarlet Pimpernel's gorgeous but confused wife, Marguerite. Will she discover in time that the Scarlet Pimpernel is her husband, or will he fall into the hands of Chauvelin?

This movie will keep you on the edge of your seat as you accompany The Scarlet Pimpernel on his incredible adventures!

Five stars for superb acting, wonderful costumes, and thrilling music!

I purchased the DVD because I had seen this program once on TV several years ago (1983, to be exact)and remembered enjoying it. Since then, I have read The Scarlet Pimpernel several times and after I finished it this last time I decided to try and find the video. It doesn't follow the book very closely at all but it's still a pretty good movie. The costuming is excellent and viewers do get a good sense of the fear that gripped Paris during the Reign of Terror.

A classically well acted and well directed play for the screen. The casting is excellent, and the flow of the screenplay makes for a truly entertaining evening. This is one of those films you want to watch yearly.

Anthony Hawkins is a brilliant actor who makes this movie amazing. It is about a man who leads a double life and one who comes to find he has to be an actor in private as well as in public. Some of the best movie lines are in this film and i know that if someone watches it, they will enjoy it. I definely recommend it for all audiences.

Saw the Broadway musical and the older version with Leslie Howard [?]. I enjoyed this presentation of it. Jane Seymour was "stunning" in this. Beautiful costumes of the time period. The "fade outs" and "fade in" reminded me of TV commercials being cut out.

There are many versions of The Scarlet Pimpernel, and this is by far the best. Well written, superbly cast, this is a witty adventure set against the backdrop of the purging terror following the French Revolution. A great addition to any collection.

I have loved this movie since I was in the 10th grade and constantly rented it from Blockbuster until they stopped carrying it. After having not seen it in over 10 years, watching it last night was a thrill....LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!!
