Director Steven Spielberg's World War II tour de force chronicles the journey of a GI squad on a dangerous mission behind enemy lines. Led by Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks), the unit is under orders to track down a soldier, Private Ryan (Matt Damon), so he might return home to his mother in America, where she is grieving the unimaginable loss of her three other sons to the war. The first unforgettable 20 minutes of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN realistically and horrifically depicts the Normandy invasion as Miller. his second-in-command, Sergeant Horvath (Tom Sizemore), and the others in the unit land at Omaha Beach. Before the film began shooting, Hanks and the actors in his squad went through a one-week boot camp in the woods. All the actors, except Hanks, wanted to quit, but Hanks rallied their spirits by reminding them of the incredible tribulations endured by the real veterans of World War II. Production designer Tom Sanders found a beach in Ireland that perfectly matched the landscape of Normandy’s. Spielberg gave great credit to the Irish army who helped re-create the Omaha Beach scenes.

This movie it a real eye opener. It makes me thankful to all the men and woman who serve our country. My husband is serving right now. He has been gone for a year. I always think about him and this movie. Wondering if he is going through what the guys went through in the movie. My husband has been to war 3 times in 8 years. He has missed so much in his childrens lives.

This movie brings hope that there are those men and woman who will do anything to save a comrad. Who risk their lives for our freedom. Even though this is just a movie, it brings out the real picture of what our military go through. Its hard to watch these kind when I know my husband is going through the same situation.

I wouldn't let my children watch it, its way to graphic. Its not a movie I would recommend for the faintest of the heart either.

Pray that all our troops come home safetly!!!

This movie should be seen by every Junior High and/or High School student in this country. Yes, the first 25 minutes of the movie are a bit strong in its content, but this is EXACTLY what our brave men had to deal with during the landings on Normandy. Our children today need to understand just what a lethal war WWII really was and what our forefathers did to preserve our freedom that we enjoy today. It seems like WWII is somewhat played down or forgotten about today with all of its veterans fast leaving this earth. There are very few around who actually participated in that conflict.

This movie is absolutely EXCELLENT and most compelling. I strongly urge every patriotic American to see this movie at least one time in their life. Along this same theme and another series I highly recommend is the HBO production "Band of Brothers".

One Of The "BEST" War EPIC'S To Date

Some people advise others to close their eyes during the long opening scene of Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan. That would be a mistake. Yes, it's carnage, it's horrible, it's relentless, it's bloody, it's random death, it's a portrayal of fear and courage and raw coincidence. But it's also one of the most powerful pieces of cinematography ever filmed.
There are many other scenes that have stayed with me during the years since I last saw this unforgettable film, perhaps Spielberg's best ever. Perhaps the most poignant one that comes immediately to mind is the woman whose sons are all away at war. She's on a remote farm, washing dishes, and thru her window she sees the dust of approaching cars. She goes outside to meet the visitors, tenses as she sees military brass and a chaplain step from the cars, then crumples wordlessly to the worn boards of her front porch as she tries to take in the news: all her boys have been killed, except for one: Private Ryan.
Another related scene, the one that came just before this one, is equally gut-wrenching (and in both scenes, there is no dialogue, just heart-stabbing visuals that are more powerful than any words could have been) as a woman charged with sending out letters of the We Regret to Inform You variety realizes that she's seen three letters with the same address within the past few days, and she takes this terrible proof to her supervisor - and thus is born the search for the surviving son, to bring him home to his momma.
Tom Hanks, with his own persona of morality and honesty, is perfectly cast as the good Captain Miller, a soldier's soldier charged with this onerous task, and of course there is terrible cost.
Saving Private Ryan is the film Spielberg HAD to make. Outstanding, in every possible way. Well rounded film to add to your DVD collection.

Personal Rating - 9.5 VERY SOLID!! If your a fan of war films this will make a terrific addition.

The storyline to this movie is great. It is a long movie so it is worth your time to get it on a saturday night. LOL But at the same time folks it is NOT a childs movie. In fact if you aren't old enough to know what some of those words mean you shouldn't be watching it. There is a reason ABC pulled it. The language is absolutely horrible. I have a potty mouth on me and for a woman can talk much like a sailor but this movie made even me a bit uncomfortable.

Shows the Real aspects of War & what it does to those who are trying to live through it.Will some day,if not already,be a Classic as the interaction between members of sqaud of soldiers who don't understand the full meaning of what they are involved in as any soldier feels,is the main plot to me.Great action, just enough gore for realism.

This is one of the more realistic World War II movie's out there and after watching it with my Grandfather , who was in the war , even he said it took him back there like it was yesterday. Tom Hanks does a fine job with his acting , but is also surrounded by a wonderful group of supporting actor's who really make the movie. It is one of my all time favorite's and a must see if you haven't done so already !!

Everyone needs to see this! It's what Americans need to be reminded what these men did for the freedom that is now being taken for granted and abused!
May we never forget!

Anyone who says this movie does not deserve a 5 rating is crazy. This movie was so raw and honest. It was most definitely a step up from its time, and even more sophisticated than any movies made in the 2000's.

This movie, having won five Academy Awards and deserved more, is splendid in every way. Some call this movie Spielberg's greatest film. It is about eight men who are sent behind enemy lines in Normandy to rescue a paratrooper whose brothers have been killed in combat and is the last son left to his mother. This movie has one of the most realistic portrayals of combat and the angry emotions felt on both sides. This movie is definitely not for the squeamish, but despite its many gut wrenching scenes, it is absolutely a classic worth owning.

Very realistic movie about the war. But too graphic for children. I am glad it did not include any over riding political message. You can watch this this one with out having to sort out the political spin. The story line was very moving. Makes "grown men" cry.

This is a MUST BUY. It is one of those videos that you should watch periodically to remember what our military does for us. The sacrifice that is made for OUR freedom. It is amazing that those heros can be so selfless! It also shows how the families go through great grief and should be thanked as well! The movie is action packed and is a WINNER by me!!!

This movie was recommended by my college history teacher. He said that the beach scenes were as close to actual combat as he has seen without actually being there. Tom Hanks is an awesome actor and this is no exception.

Review:
I bought the NewPhone 74205 three weeks ago and was immediately impressed with the number of features available on this inexpensive phone. It has a 1M-pixel camera, video camera, and speakerphone. The NewPhone's size is perfect for carrying in a pocket and the battery has a pretty good lifespan of roughly 4 hours. My only complaint is that the menu system on the phone makes you click four times before you can find someone in the address book, set an alarm, or perform a additional functions. Other phones I've owned have simpler menus and get you to important features easily. Overall, I'd recommend the phone if you're on a budget.

War is ugly, yet necessary For True Freedom Then & Now!
Review created: 08/03/09
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

On June 6th, 1944, The Marines stormed the beaches of Normandy for one reason, to take back the strongholds that the Germans had on the coastline. We had to stamp out this sore on land and we had to do it hard and fast. I couldn't even imagine that this had to be done then, as well as I didn't imagine 19 years before I was born that I might not have had that chance of being born, but I did.

My own grandfather served in the Army in the Alaskan chain of islands for a tour and was soon to be shipped out to fight for the battle of the bulge as well. My grandfather became ill with a kidney infection and just missed his company getting shipped out. Thusly, my mother had a father at home after the war ended, and I actually did get born.

Saving Private Ryan is a very powerful film depicting a true to life situation to save a young Private who has to bare the burden of perhaps returning from the war and make some sense out of why he survived and his brothers all died in the call of duty. Private Ryan (Matt Damon) is first unaware of his brother's demise, but soon learns of the news about them all.

Director Steven Spielberg depicts a larger than life size story about the means to an end to lead a squad of men into a dangerous zone behind enemy lines, just to rescue this Ryan and get him back to his home. Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) leads the unit whose orders are to track down Private Ryan return home where his mother is grieving the unimaginable loss of her three other sons to different battles of the war. The first unforgettable 20 minutes of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN realistically and horrifically depicts the Normandy invasion as Miller. his second-in-command, Sergeant Horvath (Tom Sizemore), and the others in the unit land at Omaha Beach.

Casting was probably the easiest part for the pre-production team, yet making the movie appear realistic was a definite challenge. Spielberg would have it no other way than true-to-life. That's why the film won so many academy awards.

I'll give this a 5/5 or 100% for its valiant men who died at the orders of their superiors for such an important cause they all finally related to in the end.

IF YOU LIKE MY REVIEWS, PLEASE DON'T HESITATE TO LET ME KNOW BY VOTING. THANKS.

This movie is great it is #1 on my list. If you have not seen it then you are really missing out!

It is just like being there. Tip- watch this movie with surround soud!

I have heard that people who were thre on D-Day have said that the movie brings it to life. Of course it is not just like being there but as far as the props and the "gore" goes it is very real.

MUST SEE!! 100 STARS!

Saving Private Ryan is one of my all time favorite movies. Not just because of the story line or the action but it is a commentary on why America is such a great country. One can only imagine what they went through and it is just a small insight on why they are the greatest generation.
