Savage Inequalities by Jonathan Kozol (1992, Paperback, Reprint)

I bought the book, Savage Inequalities, by Jonathan Kozol a few weeks ago because I had remembered reading it in college. I am a teacher, and am constantly seeking information and ideas to expand my mind, and those of my students. This is a wonderful book. The case study format really allows you to see how education varies from school to school. Kozol really allows you to see just how unjust the education system can be, and those who lose out...the students.

Your education is not complete without reading Kozol.

This book is full of antecdotal evidence about the segregation of America's schools. Packed with facts, stories that will make you weep and political statements that will incite ire it's an easy read compared with so many other academic authors. What is not an easy read is the content.

If you are a parent you must read this book. If you are a poor parent you must read this book and pass it on to your neighbors while you start taking action. If you are middle or upper middle class you must read this book, pass it on to your neighbors and take both resposibility and action.

Please read this, absorb it and bring it home.

Then when you're selling on eBay perhaps you'll feel compelled to use giving works as a way to take care of our kids. Perhaps there will never be another chapter rightly entitled, "Other People's Children."

As an educator and graduate student, I've often heard professors in the field refer to this book. Kozol paints a vivid picture of disparate American schools. I was fully aware of the differences in the educational opportunities afforded our black & Latino children. We should feel ashamed to title this American education as it in no way resembles the schooling and instruction offered to white studetns.

Very negative viewpoint. Exaggerates the role of racism. Barely mentions poor whites and rural areas, and doesn't consider lack of proper parenting as a contributing factor to these social ills. Doesn't offer solutions.
