Synopsis
Rushdie's controversial bestseller, which earned him a sentence of death from the Islamic hierarchy of Iran, is a magical realist fantasy that examines questions of identity and belief. Two survivors of an airplane crash, Saladin and Gibreel, are transformed from ordinary citizens and public figures into personifications of Good and Evil, complete with horns, haloes, and holy wars. Sardonic and bleak at the same time, THE SATANIC VERSES is a striking parable of faith and doubt in the postmodern world.

Publisher's Note
Just before dawn one winter's morning, a hijacked jumbo jet blows apart high above the English Channel. Two figures fall to the sea, later washing up, alive, on a beach. It was an ambiguous miracle, for both seem to have acquired curious changes. Both have been chosen as opponents in the eternal wrestling match between Good and Evil.

Industry Reviews
"Abudant in enchanting narratives and amazingly peopled, 'The Satanic Verses' is both a philosophy and an Arabian nights entertainment. What wit, what real warmth in Rushdies's thousand-eyed perceptions of the inferno within us and the vainglory of our aspirations! His ambitions are huge, and his creativity triumphantly matches them."
Nadine Gordimer

"A novel of metamorphoses, hauntings, memories, hallucinations, revelations, advertising, jingles, and jokes...Rushdie has the power of description and we succumb."
Victoria Glendinning

"Talent? Not in question. Big talent. Ambition? Boundless ambition. Salman Rushdie is a storyteller of prodigious powers, able to conjure up whole geographies, causalities, climates, creatures, customs, out of thin air....As a display of narrative energy and wealth of invention, 'The Satanic Verses' is impressive."

One of the most controversial books of all time

I bought this book to see for myself what all the controversy was all about. The book mostly deals with issues of identity, immigration and language through the adventures of two Hindu Muslims in Britain. Nothing controversial there, people who have lived abroad would find this part quite interesting and relevant. The parts that I believe eventually led to the death fatwa for Rushdie are the chapters that deal with the life of Mohammed, angel Gibreel, the ayetollah. The author gives an alternative version of the official history of Islam, presents Mohammed as a common person with his flaws rather than a prophet, has a few less than kind words for the ayetollah. Overall, I think the book presents a different and fresh perspective on Islam. As a Muslim, I enjoyed the book and wasn't offended by the author's ideas.
