  Sarah's Key
Review created: 12/05/09

My book club elected to read this novel which I absolutely loved. I was so motivated to find out what would happen in the next chapter. There are 11 million stories for each Jew, retarded person, gypsy, gay or lesbian, and Christian, who was persecuted in Europe during World War II. I enjoy reading about the character who, in modern times, is motivated to pursue some type of research leading back to what happened to a certain individual during the War. This story has a wonderful ending. I love comparing these war stories with other novelists, who treat the same themes. Markus Zusak's "The Book Thief", Diane Ackerman's "The Zookeeper's Wife" and Debra Dean's "The Madonnas of Leningrad" are all related to "Sarah's Key", but set in different countries with different individuals, and the unique voice and imagination of each author.

This was the most awesome book I have read in awhile. It was so heartbreaking and what made it even more heartbreaking was that it was a true story. It's amazing how some people can be so mean to others. I highly recomend this book to anyone who enjoys non-fiction books.

  very appropriate to the story

One of the finest stories I have read about the Holocaust.. I liked the format- the chapters, tho flashback, style, were never confusing as sometimes that style of writing can be. The book was very well written-- very informative as well, particularly about the role of the French government's role in reporting and imprisoning and torturing Jews..

  France's well-kept secret
Review created: 07/10/09

The book was well-written and offered an interesting event during World War II that I had never heard about or learned about in school. We covered World War II and the Holocaust extensively, yet France's well-kept secret was not revealed. Overall, a great read!

I decided to buy the book on my cousin's recommendation. It is a sad but factual story that awakens the awareness to a terrible tragedy during WW II.
I didn't find anything about the book I didn't like. It is well written and each chapter keeps you coming back for more. hard to put down.

  Sarah's Key reveals little-known history
Review created: 05/04/09

By using a fictional modern-day character to trace events connected with the roundup of Jews in occupied Paris in 1942, de Rosnay is able to teach us a history lesson within 21st century context. A dramatic story, this book is hard to put down. Sarah's Key will stay with me for a long time.

Good read for a book club

This was a book we used for our monthly book club members (6 women between ages of 29-35) and all of us really liked it. Some loved it and others thought quite good. The characters were very likeable and easy to follow as it went from person to person. Would recommend as a quick read.

Sarah's Key by Tatiana De Rosnay
Review created: 02/01/09
by:

A powerful story of the arrest and deportation of the Jews from France to German concentration camps in July 1942 by the French police. The story centers on 10 year old Sarah. Knowing something was wrong but not understanding it fully, when the French police arrive at her door, she hides her younger brother in a cabinet, locks it and puts the key in her pocket. Sarah has no comprehension that she will not return home in a short peroid of time. Her only thought is to keep her brother safe from the police and to come back and get him later. Of course, this never happens and Sarah is left with the truths of that night and the need to know what happened to her brother. It is her story during the war and, 60 years later, the story of a young American journalist who unravels Sarah's story. The Vel d'Hiv, as this event is known, is truly a sad and alarming part of French history. One can't help but wonder if, in fact, how many French Jews would have survived if the Nazi's had not received so much help from the French police. As books like this are written, one gets the impression that the Nazi's would not have had the success they had in the extermination of the Jews had it not been for the aiding and abetting of their horrendous crime by people like the ones in this story. Ms. De Rosnay delivers the poignant story with historical accuracy and a sensitivity for those families who survived and mourn those they lost.
