M260 better than Nano 4gb? A BIG FAT HECK YEAH!

You've probably read about all the problems with Ipods and their non-existant customer support. Well I'm hear to tell you there is another choice. After my 3rd or 4th hard drive player died (not Ipod) I began researching flash players. I was so intrigued with the Nano 4gb...I just cannot wait 4-5 years for the price to drop to an affordable level. I prefer the flash players for working out and working outside. In my research I discovered the Sandisk Sansa m200 flash players. I couldn't believe the prices. They were very affordable, especially compared to Nano. The Sansa's are in all the usual sizes, 512mb (m230), 1gb (m240), 2gb (m250). Their website doesn't even list it, but I found this gem...The m260 is an incredibly small 4GB flash player. not as thin (or fragile) as the Nano, but more durable since it won't bend. I could only find it on Ebay and found 1 at circuit city 3 hours away. Well the other thing is there was (and still is) a phenominal deal with Real player's Rhapsody to go. Which is a wonderful service that for $15 bucks a month allows you to download all the music you want. (no more $.99 songs) They gave me an $80 rebate for buying the sansa, if I committed to 6 months of Rhapsody to go. Which was a no brainer to me. So I did it. Drove 3 hours away to get the 260, signed up for Rhapsody and I am in MP3 heaven! Total price for the 260 w/tax was $180.00. You can get them much cheaper on Ebay...My advice, don't hesitate! These are wonderful! They are hard to find. I imagine Sandisk didn't realize how popular they'd be and sold out in most places. Technically speaking, the sound is great, built a little bulky but actually about the size of my middle and index finger together. Very light, superior battery performance compared to Nano too. Cannot remove theirs, this runs on a AAA battery and lasts about 16 hours. Mine seem to last closer to 20. I recently bought rechargeable batteries. Try Rhapsody to go also, The deal, you cannot beat! Oh my, I almost forgot! It also has an easy to use voice recorder and an FM radio! I tell you, this device is AWESOME! I just got an email from Circuit City that says they are in! Go get one, you won't be dissappointed.

Sansa m260: One of THE BEST Value and Quality-based MP3
Review created: 06/07/06

This baby is the hottest thing I got recently. I was debating weather to get this or an Ipod Nano and seeing that a 4GB nano cost more than $200 I opted for this one at the stealing price of only $150 (including shipping)! Compared to the Nano the m260 has a nice FM tuner. Just be sure that you are out in the open or are not deep inside a large building because the reception is a little weak but walking outside like at the part or sitting by the window in your office it works just fine.

The battery life is SO OUT OF THIS WORLD - 19 hours of straight music from a SINGLE AAA battery! The music is easy to load. Either you use Windows Media Player 9 (or another similar program) or just drag and drop. The ear buds that come with the player are of pretty excellent quality as well. I'm kind of a picky person when it comes to sound quality and I found the included earbuds perfect except that the bass is a little weak but that's not a problem unless you're the type who wants a really deep, meaty bass reproduction. The display screen is small but it does the job well of displaying my selections and titles of songs. It has a nice blue-colored LED backlight to illuminate the screen. The only thing is that when the battery does down about 1/4 backlight no longer works but the display is still present (just make sure you have some light) to see it).

The BEST thing that I love about this bad dude is that it is FLASH BASED - no harddrive. Therefore I can take it running and dancing and not worrying about any internal parts getting damaged because there are not moving parts! Plus it is 4 GB for $150 or less! The quality of the unit is well-made and I HIGHLY recommend this MP3 player to anyone looking for a swell MP3 player but with a SUPERB balance of quality, features and value.

Pros:
~ Dirt cheap and great value
~ High Quality (I was sururpsed!)
~ Excellnt sound reproduction even with its included earbuds
~ Sound equalizer
~ 19 hours straight on a single AAA battery!
~ Memory-based (no risk of damaging a harddrive thus more rugged)
~ FM tuner!
~ Small, lightweight
~ It comes with a handy clear-plastic case/pouch that you can conveniently strap to your arm.
~ Is compatible with subscription music services like Yahoo Music and Real Raphsody!

Cons:
~ Included earbuds lacking in bass.
~ FM tuner a little weak indoors.
~ Backlight goes out when battery life gets to about 1/4.
~ If you're playing an a particular album of an artist and want to choose a different one from the same artist you'll have to go back to the menu, select the artist, and then the album instead of allowing you to back directly to the artist.
~ Maybe I got a defective unit but when I place the player in Hold mode all the music has static. But when turned off the music plays normally.

  OK But Problematic
Review created: 03/16/07

I bought a Sansa m260 about a year ago on eBay. I have been using it until now--just recently it has had a major meltdown, preventing me from deleting all the files off of it in order to refill it and hopefully repair it, and rendering the player seemingly unusable. This meltdown typifies the overall performance of this MP3 player. The player works fine most of the time, but often has annoying major glitches that put a dent in its likeability. For example, an artist I had on the device that played perfectly fine on my computer did not work on the Sansa, and in addition caused the player to malfunction until the battery was removed and put back in. The same thing happened with a song that also played perfectly fine on my computer--it caused the player to freeze. Many of these glitches happened to the player on a regular basis. This also happened with a similar model one of my parents purchased--it malfunctioned frequently after a few days and eventually froze to the point of unusability. While the Sansa m260 has some nice perks that other value-priced MP3 players of its kind don't--, a recorder, mostly crystal-clear FM radio, a somewhat friendly interface, easy PC-to-player transfer, and compatibility with Windows Media Player--the frequent debilitating issues are too hard to overlook. Even the casual user will most likely be faced with numerous problems with the m260, and any other similar player of the SanDisk line. I advise potential buyers of this product, from any retailer, to proceed with caution. This is an OK product, but sometimes the problems tend to outweigh the strengths.

  SanDisk Sansa m260 (4 GB) MP3 Player
Review created: 06/22/06

Purchased mine on sale at Circuit City (there were no better Ebay deals at the time and this was my first mp3 player so I didn't want to risk it.

I purchased this one over IPOD due to it being nearly 50% less than a 4gb nano plus it had an FM tuner. I didn't want to mess with a hard-drive since I take this running, on the mower, bike, etc. and I've dropped it a couple times already.

To sum-up, an excellent player at an excellent price. The only issue I have is since I was new to this mp3 podcast thing, it took me a while to find a reliable podcast client (unlike when you have an IPOD, you can be brain-dead and get it right). Use FeedDemon2 for podcasts (it's $30 but worth it- the freebee's aren't that good and crash a lot).

The only other minor thing is the display is small, and "jogs" across the screen too slow and doesn't show much song info. Also, searching for a title is limited. A work-around is to use a "tag editor" (audioshell tageditor is one) to shorten the tags so you have more control over the display reading (and you can shorten it)....

  SanDisk Sansa M260
Review created: 01/06/09

Real good FM Radio. Scans the band and preloads the 20 strongest stations. I used it in Atlanta last weekend to find local unknown stations. Did same at home when I returned last night. MP3 Player, no surprises. several selection options available, ie... artist, genre, date, etc. Not flat like some so bulges in pocket, but I like it. I bought several more. I keep books on one, and different types of music on others. So I can keep my place when I change players. A good buy, suits my needs.............

  Great Performance!!

The Sansa Sandisk m260 is getting a bit long in the tooth in the electronic world and is several generations out of date but I like them so much. Prices have fallen to the point that if you lose them or damage them it isn't a huge financial crisis which is a good thing in today's environment. The units are very reliable and pretty well built so a short fall won't put it out to the electronic grave yard. Additionally, I really like the battery set up which is a regular AAA battery so you can getting going again quickly with a new battery - none of that recharging pit stop. They don't seem to burn up batteries too quickly if you turn off the display illumination. I use rechargeables and keep a few charged and on hand but worse case when the battery dies in a most inconvient location you can usually find a convenience store or somebody nearby with a fresh battery. A good antique device.
