Alright, but not great
'Samurai Deeper Kyo' is an action-packed tale of an alternate Japan, but unfortunately falls short of its promise. While well paced and interesting in the first half of the series, it rapidly falls into an overly compressed jumble of plot in search of an ending. it's unfortunate because if perhaps spread over a few more episodes, it could have been much better then it was.
While it's plot and pacing are a dissappointment, the animation and action sequences are extremely lovely and well done. The characters definitely had the potential for more as well, within the storyline's constraints they all manage to have their interesting moments.
The overall extras of the DVD set are not as extensive as could be hoped, but offer a few amusing outtakes and interviews and the menus are fairly easy to access with a nice selection of options. Overall, not the best or worst of it's genre.
