Semi-QWERTY Fully Functional The "Mullet of Mobile"
Review created: 09/27/08(updated 09/27/08)
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I liked the SGH-T719 which was a very sedate two tone grey flip phone from Samsung. You could whip it out in any business meeting and no one would even notice. Then T-Mobile changed direction and what a good direction they took!

From the grey flannel button down look they went uptown to the "mullet of mobile phones". We all know a mullet is "business in the front and party in the back." The black front of the Blast is the business end. The deep crimson red on the back of the phone was meant for partying.

The Business End

1- Semi-QWERTY SureType keypad. I call it a double tap. You can get to any letter with two taps. Need an "s"? Two taps is all you need, not four like on conventional keypads. Some letters require only a single tap. This will speed your thoughts and feelings on their way once you get used to it. XT9 predictive text will help as well.

2- E-mail is the heart and soul of this phone. The T719 had Blackberry Connect. This does away with the Blackberry Connect and has a less money hungry e-mail client allowing Protocols: IMAP4, POP3, SMTP and if you have accounts with AOL, Yahoo!, or Gmail set-up is a snap. IM is also provided.

3- Quadband coverage is a must in a business device. Not everyone travels on business but if you do: is porting all of your contacts to a different mobile something you want to mess with right before you go out of the country? This is a true world phone. It also has flight mode which turns off all of the radios in the phone for that airplane trip.

4- EDGE, Class 10 allows the browser to keep you updated pretty quickly. It's not 3G but it is adequate.

5- 11 megabytes of internal memory augmented by up to 2 gigabytes of microSD storage means you won't be seeing the "out of memory" message right away either.

6- 1000 entry phone book, with up to 5 entries per name means you'll be able to reach out to your contacts when you need to even when your fingers are busy with SIND - Speaker Independent Name Dialing. Additional PIM functions also are on the phone. It supports MyFaves.

The Party End

1- Music player supports MP3 and ACC formats.

2- Bluetooth has a full plate of profiles. (A2DP, AVRC, BPP, DUN, FTP, HFP, HSP, OPP) A2DP is the one that will get your party animal's attention. This allows the music player to send the output to stereo headphones. Think - Silent Rave.

3- The 1.3 megapixel camera is up to Samsung's usual high quality for cameras. It has SXGA (1280x1024) resolution, a 4x digital zoom, brightness control and a multi-shot setting that will take between 6 to 15 frames in rapid order depending on how you set the function to operate. It is also a video player-recorder supporting .3gp and .mp4 files. Like most on-phone video recorders it does not record video at anything close to the sensor's maximum resolution. This uses QCIF 176 × 144 resolution at what appears to be about 15 frames per second.

4- Java games can be the life of the party as well. t-zones will be more than willing to sell or lease to you any number of games for this phone. There are also third party games that will work quite well. That's the beauty of Java.

The Wrap

Get used to the keyboard - this is a decent phone. It is solid. Samsung makes pretty solid sliders, the U600 excepted. The black and red looks really good. It does everything you want a cell phone to do, it doesn't weight a ton, it will fit in your jacket pocket or your purse. T-Mobile fully supports it. Loosen up a bit!

Great Phone but Not For Use with Other Carriers
Review created: 08/07/08

One of my closest friends had a Samsung Blast with T-Mobile. After I had played with it a little I decided I liked the font, the layout, the QWERTY keypad and the slider style of the phone. So I purchased one for use with AT&T, because normally phones that work with T-Mobile can work with AT&T.

It has great sound quality and it would be my favorite phone IF it wasn't branded to T-Mobile. I cannot receive or send picture messages or any type of MMS because I do not have T-Mobile. Which was such a disappointment, because I'm very happy with AT&T and the phone fits my lifestyle perfectly. Unfortunately I send a lot of MMS because I have friends across the state and across the country and I like to share photos with them quickly. It does send and receive SMS with no problem, so if you aren't a picture-sharing person then you don't have to worry about it.

So in the end, if you have T-Mobile I would definitely recommend the Blast. But if not and you enjoy having MMS capability, go with some other phone. I am currently using my Blackberry Pearl.

I LOVE THIS SAMSUNG BLAST PHONE

I LOVE THIS PHONE
I HAD GOOD EXPERIANCE USING SAMSUNG PHONES AND
I DECIDED TO PURCHASE ANOTHER ONE AND I'M REALLY HAPPY WITH THE CHOICE I'VE MADE. ESPECIALLY THE QWERTY PAD IS VERY NICELY DESIGNED FOR THE USER AND VARIETY OF SOUNDS TO CHOOSE... FAIRLY DURABLE DESIGN YET VERY SLICK LOOKING.
I WOULD DEFINATELY CONTINUE BUYING SAMSUNG PHONE IN THE FUTURE

  Excellent Phone

I used to get Samsung phones all the time, then decided to switch to a different brand. Big mistake! Samsungs just last longer and have better quality over all. With the Blast it took me a minute to get used the qwerty keyboard for text messaging, but was able to pick it up real quick. The only thing I don't like is the battery drains really fast so I'm having to charge it every 2-3 days. But other than that I love my phone!

  Good but not the best

I have this phone, and had it for almost a year. Its a good phone, with a bright screen and tons of features, including email and music player.

Whats bad about it is that dust/dirt can easily get into the back slot under the camera. I accidentally dropped my phone in sand, and a lot of sand got inside. What i did was use a gas-duster can to blow everything out of it, and works perfectly again.

Also, the MicroSD slot is extremely hard to insert/remove since its so much inside the phone, you need like long nails or a tool (fork/toothpick/etc) to get out the chip.

But other than the MicroSD slot and the open space in the back, its a really good phone, and will last for a long time if used properly and taken care of.

Good features, solid design (unlike Motorola). Bluetooth, SD Micro card. Music player is hard to figure out - won't play MP3 files and doesn't say what format is acceptable. Owner's manual also does not address. But who uses their phone to listen to music anyway?

  Samsung Blast is awesome!

I wanted a stylish black phone, that had a keyboard and the Blast looked perfect. I love it! The QWERTY keypad took me a while to figure out, so text messaging is hard, but after a week, I got the hang of it. It's an easy-to-use phone and it comes with a memory card slot, so I can upload music to the music player. It has a camera and even an image editor. This phone is awesome.

  Blast OFF!
Review created: 09/05/08
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

So, the thing is, my old phone's screen had broken, and to prevent myself from dialing wrong numbers repeatedly, i had to get myself a phone i could see on. The Samsung Blast was inexpensive, I saved myself at least $50 if I were to buy from T-Mobile.com. I love that I could put my unlimited texting plan back to good use as I was able to text with it's QWERTY keyboard. The only problem was that it was gently used- normal wear and tear all around. Overall, I love this phone. My old phone, the U600, is hard to compare to any other phone, but the Blast did a great job being an older model of it.

i really like the samsung blast. it was in great condition when i got it. it was hard to get used to the qwerty text key board, but now that i am used to it, it is way easy. i like the slider a lot. some people say that they have a harder time hearing me on this new phone than my old one which was a samsung flip phone. there or course are a few flaws in the phone, but for the most part i really like it. and i was very pleased with the seller because it was in such good condition when i got it. my only complaint is that a manual did not come with it.

Very slim. Does everything it says it does. Mega features. easy to use. Would buy another Blast and recommend to friends and family any time. Bluetooth - stereo and headset - is cool

Sim card a bit tough to get out, but that only happens once in a while, so who cares.
