Great phone, lousy at everything else.

I seek the utility of a basic cell phone, like my old Samsung E105. That old phone was a small clamshell, had an ever-visible daytime clock that could be instantly lit for night viewing, and an alarm so I could rapidly key-in an appointment. The vibrate/audio alarm worked well, and it had a neat psychedelic multicolor LED lamp that warned when messages arrived and worked well to locate the phone when it rang in the dark. The free ringtones sucked. I soon stopped wearing a watch and I never missed an appointment. I became spoiled with the simple utility and it lasted a long time. Then I managed to break it. I replaced it with a Samsung T619 and have been miserable since. The T619 is a fine cell phone, but is an awful clock and worse alarm. Talk quality, listen quality, and reception quality are all very good. The demo phone at the T-Mobile store showed a fake image of the clock - in reality it is tough to make it show the time, even using two hands. I've found myself looking at watches again as I visit stores. The appointment alarm is an insult. It absolutely requires a full QWERTY keyboard to use (not available), and requires all kinds of pointless data just to set a simple alarm. I counted 50 keystrokes without any text notes. I applaud the mechanical and electrical engineering team, as they are leading edge. The bozos designing the software must have all been in management, because this phone has all kinds of inappropriately selected firmware stuffed into it. The solution to my disappointments would be: Hit any external button and the external clock instantly illuminates for a few seconds, then half dims for a few more. This can be desensitized in software to assure false triggers don't waste the battery, but requires that Samsung take mamagement out of the programmers chairs. Don't put the camera button exactly opposite the lamp button, as both get squeezed when trying to apply one, and the phone responds by doing nothing. Put a useable appointment alarm on this thing. The alarm Samsung installed on the T619 belongs in some sort of desktop suite. Today I downgraded to a blue Samsung T209, as it appeared to have the simple features that have become part of my daily routine. It will arrive in a week.
