Great for typing, ok for surfing and customization

I loved how light and small this phone was and the qwerty keyboard. However, the screen is much smaller than most of the newer phones and it takes a lot of scrolling to move up and down webpages or through your contacts. I moved to a BlackJack II after giving my iPhone to my fiance and was surprised to see many apps that are free from iTunes have a monthly charge for the same app in Windows variety. Overall, I think this would be a good phone if you are all about messaging and email. If you are big into contact lists, customizing your phone, or web surfing, I would look at something else.

  Samsung Blackjack II (I617)

Great phone! It does everything I expected it to do and more. It is not a simple device and reading the documentation is a must to obtain the most from the Blackjack II.

The phone I purchased was a used AT&T system phone. If you do not have a 3G SIM card the telephone will not work unless you have it unlocked. The unlock codes are available on eBay for about $20.00.

Definately worth the money.

Better than people give it credit for

I'm not a sales person and I don't own a store but I have been using Windows mobile devices for a long time. I've also been a mobile phone user since the days of the bag phones so I have a little experience with the industry. I say all that to say I have no idea what people are complaining about when it comes to this phone. This is actually the first phone I bought while the phone was considered new technology. I’ve haven’t had a two year contract in 5 years but I made the sacrifice this time and I’m glad I did.

My last three phones have been Windows mobile devices and I’ve also owned PDA’s and the only problem I face is that some of the programs I purchased for my PDa don’t work on the blackjack. (I need the stylus functionality). I have 6 programs I purchased from Handango and 5 of them work great on my new phone. I play chess, I have an electronic wallet, I track my diet, I use Windows live search and Yahoo Go! On my phone and I couldn’t be happier.

In Philadelphia, the internet connection is fast, and I alwys have at least three bars so nothing is slow. The camera takes great pictures and I can upload them to the web or send them to my friends , (witch is great for flirting).

I can view MS Office files, PDF files, and sync up to my employers email as well as my personal email on the web. You guys can complain about petty little stuff about how thick it is or how heavy it is, but to complain about that stuff is a waste of time if you want something that works.

Some people I know who have this phone have connected to XM radio, they buy music online and complain about very little. I highly recommend this phone and the only reason why I don’t give it a 5 out 5 is because I can’t use my stylus based programs… but I knew that when I bought it. Without the stylus, I can do everything I want to with one hand.

  Samsung's Blackjack 2.....A full deck!
Review created: 07/11/08
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This 3G capable phone has everything that a busy body could want and need. Equiped with a 2 MP camera and video recorder, full QWERTY keyboard, windows mobile 6, and high speed data and internet transfer, the Blackjack 2 is a treat to PDA lovers, particularly windows mobile Gurus! You can now edit actual windows office documents straight from your phone, as well as listen to music with windows media player, or decide to chat it up with your IMs and SMS'. A new click wheel makes finding things a breeze, and not to mention the new shortcut keys added from the previous Blackjack (SGH-i607) that will speed things up a bit for you. Another feat of this ultra small device is the organization! who said blackberry was the only true PDA? The blackjack 2 is well endowed with calendar, e-mail, and alarms that make the cell phone industry do a 180! At a great price of only $149.99 for a 2 year contract or $349.99 for no commitment, this product is definately worth it!

Great upgrades, but still not excellent

I own an AT&T wireless store so I get to play around and explore all the new phones before I sell them to my customers. The Blackjack II has many great upgrades over the original Blackjack but there are still some things that could have been better.
It is a lil bit thicker but in exchange has a larger battery which significantly increases its life. They have changed the operating system to windows mobile 6 and have re-designed the keyboard and other keys. I like the fact that they added the scrolling D-pad in the center. It is not that accurate sometimes but still works well. The keyboard was very bad on the first Blackjack but this one seems a little better. It is more responsive and easier to type on. Most of my customers have been very happy with their device. It is a good phone overall.

  Blackjack II is a winner!
Review created: 10/01/09

I had a previous generation Blackjack, and liked the way it functioned. The new version is even better. Controls are simple, screen is bright and legible, keyboard is easy to use. I also like the size and weight; it easily goes in a shirt pocket.

Wanted to try something new and for around $100 this phone couldn't be beat. it has the a full keyboard that took some time to get use to but once you get the hand of it it is a quick and easy way to text message. phones pretty light weight. the only problem ive had was the phone would lagg realy bad when you have a couple programs running that took up quit a bit of memory. reception is good, battery life is very good also if you charge it the right way. phones good overal
the only reason im rating this phone as "good" is becuase it doesnt come with wifi and a couple other things i would love to have on my phone but besides that this phone gets a 10/10

  Horrible customer service never again!
Review created: 09/09/09

char6872 ( 1 )

I purchased a cell phone that was described as brand new, never opened, and unlocked cell phone. When I received what I ordered, first it wasn't new it already had pictures of people I didn't know and number I also didn't know. Second, it wasn't unlocked when I put in my T-mobile sim card in the phone it could only make emergency calls. Then I contacted the seller stating the problem in a e-mailand he reponsed with he sorry and as soon as he receives the phone he would send out and replacement. I had to pay the for the return shipping of course and I was told I would be reimbursed. When the seller received the phone he sent me an email telling me the phone works just fine and he wouldn't sent out an replacement because the phone works just fine. I refused to accept a phone that wasn't new and wasn't unlocked. Now why would I send back a phone that worked prefectly fine and wait for a replacement. I opted for the refund and he said he had to charge me a restocking fee of $20 dollars which I wasn't too happy about. I am completely unsatisfied with this seller if a product isn't as described I deserve either a replacement or a full refund which I got neither of. Buyer beware of this seller, he is not here for your satisfation but for his own.

  Samsung SGH I617 BlackJack II
Review created: 08/05/09

I bought this phone as a replacement for my other BJ II phone which I gave to my daughter. I know the phone is on Windows Mobile 6.0 but upgradable to Windows Mobile 6.1. I've done this upgrade successfully before but I can't do it on this phone because the USB connectivity to my Windows Vista PC, which is required for the update, does not work. I am using the phone but disappointed that I can't use 6.1-based software. Don't buy this phone if you intend to upgrade to 6.1 on your Vista or XP computer. It works good as a phone even on Windows Mobile 6.0.

I was excited to purchase a phone. Eight days after I purchased it, I noticed it had not even been mailed, although they told me on several occasions that it had been mailed. I soon realized that this company was not going to send this phone by covering it up with poor excuses. Only until I threatened them with escalating this situation is when I saw a firm action from the seller. I finally recieved my phone after constant negotiating with this seller. Once I recieved the phone, I realized that my supposedly new phone was not so new. I had scratches on the keyboard and one of the buttons was cracked. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS SELLER! THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF ANY WAY THEY CAN!!!

  pros and cons~
Review created: 08/02/09

Pros-
It is windows based, and i like that there is Microsotf Excel and Word in it. This is a very business savy phone, and seems like it will work best for corporate structured jobs where you have Outlook mail accounts. It has yahoo IM which is a great feature, and there are lots of other applications you can add on to it, but it is somewhat limited. Unlike the Igoogle, or Iphone. This phone is capable of alot, but not really the features I was expecting it to have.
Cons-
I bought my phone UNLOCKED, because I'm in Germany and this phone is not really sold over here, so alot of the applications wouldn't work either way. And so in this status the phone is only really capable of photos, texting, and phone calls, plus the basic features. Kind of a no frills phone. It took a while to get used to. The interface is kind of tricky to learn, and I will more than likey just get a different phone in a few months. Also, I was hoping it would let me take a picture of someone and post it to thier phone number so i could also see a photo of them when they called, but no.
