Samsung D900: Thinness vs. Mobile Device Battery Life
Review created: 12/24/06(updated 03/25/07)
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

In the past year or so we’ve read about the growth of obesity in America and around the globe. Fat is out and thin is in. Mobile telephony is experiencing a similar health problem. Since Motorola released the Q offered by Verizon, mobile phone manufacturers have designed and marketed the thinnest mobile phones possible deploying current technology. Just as anorexics starve themselves into non-existence, Samsung, Motorola and Rim, among many companies, compete to produce mobile phones less than 50mm’s wide with less powerful batteries, reducing talk time and data use. Samsung’s Blackjack, released by Cingular, even includes one extra battery. Running on its 3G network drains the Blackjack faster. T-Mobile’s Dash is slightly better on talk time while RIM’s BlackBerry Pearl provides better-than-average talk/data specs. Even Palm’s Trep 680, the upgraded version of the popular 650, requires daily charging. In fact, Palm recommends “topping off” your battery daily.

The Samsung SGH-D900, a quad frequency smartphone for worldwide use, continues the trend. It’s rated at 6.5 talk time hours; however, combining average data and voice use, I clocked about 3 hours before the battery drained, similar to the Nokia N80 superphone and most Verizon and Sprint CDMA phones. The new Ultra edition 12.9 offers an exceptionally gorgeous display. This slider phone fits easily into your pocket or purse and resembles Samsung’s Blackjack with its ergonomic, textured backing. Fitting comforably in your hand, the
D-900's 80MB of internal storage plus a memory chip expansion slot is quite sufficient. The slider smoothly opens to reveal the numeric keypad and offers easy access to every menu function by pressing no more than three keys, while the center D button offers quick access to three apps plus a short-cut menu. The latter menu accesses up to nine applications. The stereo speakers on the front of the phone are loud without distortion. Reception is excellent. The music player is decent and the camera’s 3.1MP lens with auto focus and fast zooming, combined with built-in picture editing software, takes excellent pictures and videos. On the other hand, the Openwave browser lacks true HTML. The single proprietary port for power charging and a mic/headset is inconvenient but acceptable. The built-in email client restricts downloads to 300Kb—sufficient for person-to-person emails but insufficient for lengthier messages. One caveat: My unlocked D900 roamed consistently off T-Mobile’s network to Cingular, T-Mobile’s roaming partner. This is only a concern if your carrier charges extra when roaming. In sum, the Samsung D-900 has many admirable qualities. If you're looking for a mid-priced smartphone and email and internet browsing are not high on your list, the D-900 is an excellent choice.

This phone has all the features that I needed. When I talk on the phone, I can clearly hear the other person's voice with the voice clarity. The mp3 player and the camera is exceptional. The mp3 player could use a little tweaking to make it better since it won't recognize an mp3 format at times. The 3.2mp camera takes excellent shots as long as the scenery is still. Text messaging is a breeze. Customizing ring tones is easy with the samsung program. I have a 1gb micro sd card and it works great in the phone. I also downloaded more java games onto the d900. I also was able to watch a movie on this phone. The physical appearance of the phone is very slim and stylish and will get attention from others.

I think the only downside in my opinion is the phone book. I have trouble adding caller id image or ring tone to contacts since I have to add the contact from the sim to the phone so I have two same contacts. Also, plan on buying a case for this phone since even though it is durable, you don't want to drop it. You can't find faceplates or anything to replace the oem.

From the moment you slide the handset up, and the phone says "Good Morning" you start to realise, that in your hand you have everything. MP3 Player, 3meg Camera with flash, Bluetooth and a screen big enough you don,t need to squint. Having had the phone for a month now, I can say that the reception is excellent and clear, WAP works very well, and its so light it fits perfectly in your top pocket. If you want a Mini PC and Phone all in one then this is the Phone for you.

  5 Stars Cell Phone
Review created: 04/04/07

I've been a Samsung cell phone fan for a while because of its design. Let's talk about this D900. By the time when it just came out, it was one of the slimmest cell phone at its age and fully functionable. The best is it comes with a 3 megapixel camera which I believe only 1 of the Sony phone has this feature.

However, like always, Samsung has a bit problem with its funtion menu. Of course it's never been better than Nokia or Sony Erricon. However, this new version function menu defineietly can give you a new look. It is easy to use and more functional than ever.

Another good thing about this phone is the case doesn't made by plastics but PVC. That means you will not leave mark or scatch even you drop your phone on the floor and there is no fingerprint mark on the case.

Another good feature:

Large screen / Good MP3 Player / Big Keypad / Wallpaper by Country (Like if you go to China, you will see the Great Wall, if you go to the UK, you will see the Clock tower)

One more thing, cause this is pretty new for T-Flash card. It sucks, totally! The phone has some problem reading the memory card and I would highly suggest you shouldn't take your card out. Cause it will take the phone few days to "Read" the card again. Use the software directly connect to you phone.

Among those problems, I really recommend this phone and I'm glad to have it.

Thin is In! Fully Functional, Very Cool, Excellent Cell
Review created: 12/16/07(updated 02/15/08)
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Samsung has a winner with the D900. (The D908 is a Far East variant peddled by Anycall.) Lets look at why this is such a cool phone

Thin - 12.9 mm is thin. You forget it is in you pocket thin.

Pretty - Black Carbon sums up the appearance. Suave, attractive and unusual.

Fast - The user interface is quick, a trademark of Samsung.

Easy to use - The main menu is a grid or list. The sub-menus are lists that you scroll through and then navigate to the appropriate pop-up where you continue to scroll. Use the back softkey or back out using the navigate key to return to the base menu.

Camera - 3.1 megapixels of sharp, autofocused, flash illuminated photography!

Those are the high points. But it is not all that makes this such a joy. The devil is in the details is an old saying and Samsung has met and defeated its demons!

Fit and Finish - This phone is excellent in this area. The slide works smoothly and softly. It feels damped as your thumb guides it through its range of motion. At each end there is a distinct feeling of a stop but without an annoying or cheap sounding click. When you open it it stays open and when you close it it stays closed. This might seem elementary but think of all the gadgets you've used where they didn't remain in the correct position. Samsung got this right. All the pieces fit together with no noticable gaps.

Appearance- The matte black of the back contrasts gently with the gloss of the top and bottom. It's a nice effect. The screen surround picks up fingerprints too easily, it seems no matter how well you wash your hands they are always too greasy for the SGH-D900. The screen surround also sets off the brilliant screen well.

Function - It's a very capable mobile phone - excellent reception on both AT&T and T-Mobile. It sends and receives multimedia messages and SMS. It has Bluetooth with the ability to cruise your other phones and get files you want from them. Great way to transfer photos. It also has A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) allowing you to listen, in stereo, to your MP3s stored on your up to 2 gigabyte microSD card, all without wires.

Fun and Games - Sonic the Hedgehog on your mobile? It comes with the trial version of Sega's loveable character's adventure on the phone. With 4 megabytes of space dedicated to Java applications it is fully capable of running this at full speed and with excellent graphics and the original music. It also comes with other trial games.

Get to Work - It supports reading a large variety of documents - PDF, Office files, gif, html and jpeg. It also makes use of PictBridge to print wirelessly to a Bluetooth equipped printer. Need to check your e-mail? It supports POP3, IMAP4, SMTP protocols.

Look At This - The screen is a large 2.1" diagonal TFT/TFD 256,000 color 320 x 240 resolution beauty. Bright, crisp and colorful it grabs your eye from the moment you turn it on. The blackout border lens accentuates how bright and colorful the screen is.

Drawbacks - The browser is not a full HTML browser, which is a bit of disappointment on a phone with 60 megabytes of available user memory. The Nokia 6290, for example, implements a full browser with 40 megabytes of user memory. Another issue is you spend a lot of time showing people your phone. It's pretty, it's unusual and folks want to see it.

Cool, useful, thin, unique without being flashy, and totally functional - if this is what you need then this is the mobile for you!

Very rare item which has radio, D900i
Review created: 11/06/09

This model is already discontinued. The most of these model is D900 without radio but this model is D900i which has FM radio function. The seller should emphasize D900"i" not D900.

  Samsung D900
Review created: 02/04/09
by:

Samsung D900 is a really small and thin cell phone, because of which it also has problems while being dropped or abused, due to its minimal sizes, it loses rigidity and is very unprotected to get damaged.
It has a nice 3MgPixel Camera which in a lot of different cases stops to work after the phone being dropped, due to microcracks in the motherboard or some other reasons.
Music is not the strongest side, the ringtones are loud enough, but lack the quality of Nokia phones.
The sliding mechanism is quite durable and will last longer than in other phones.
Keyboard is easy to use for text messaging.
It gets good reception in most places, the quality of the call is great too.
Battery usually will last 2days with average talking and text messaging.

If the price paid for the phone in good condition is lower than $80 than it is definetly one of the best choices. but do not drop it :)

  Nice little phone but delicate
Review created: 12/27/08

I have enjoyed my D900's over the last year but they seem to get damaged easily especially with exposure to moisture. I'm on my fourth phone in less than a year. I travel over seas so the quad band is useful, it takes photos as might be expected from a phone, blue tooth capability, and I always add extra memmory. The phone is nice sized but the small keyboard makes texting dificult. All in all nice technology but I'm waiting for a water proof model.

  Very nice phone
Review created: 08/02/08
by:

The Samsung D900 is a very nice phone with a large colorful screen. The screen is as nice as a plasma TV screen. It is ergonomically well designed and feels nice in the hand to hold. Here are some pros and cons:

Pros:

- Large colorful display screen
- 3 MP camera takes great photos
- Simple to use menu system
- Great call quality and volume
- very thin and compact
- Nice speakerphone and MP3 player

Cons:

- short battery life (With moderate use, you will need to recharge the phone every two days).
- Number keys are very flat flush to the surface of the phone. (You will get used to it though).
- You cannot transfer picture or music files directly onto the phone's memory card. You first have to transfer them to the phone's memory then using your phone you can transfer each file to the memory card. This can be a pain!

Actually the only reason why I did not rate this phone "Excellent" is because of the low battery life; otherwise, the Samsung D900 is a very solid built and useable phone with great features. If you do not mind recharging a phone every two days, then buy this phone. It works very well!

  great for casual user
Review created: 06/04/08
by:

In comparison to my previous Motorola v360, the impression the Samsung has given me is great. The design is like they claim; slim, and stylish. The phone is very light, and the camera is decent quality (3mega pix). The only thing I can complain about is the D-pad, navigation key (or whatever its called) takes a bit of time to get used to... Aside from that I have nothing bad to say.

Some people apparently have trouble with the fragile screen, but its nothing a shield cant fix. If your buying a phone costing 150+, why not spend the extra 3$ to protect it? It only makes sense...

I am not a phone enthusiast, so maybe I'm not critical enough, but its a winner in my mind.

The Good and Bad of Samsung SGH D900 Ultra Edition 12.9
Review created: 04/15/08

The phone is a very good phone, easy menu's, large screen good sound and picture quality, remember this is still a phone not a high quality camera. The things I don't like are the signal quality inside store's like Wal-Mart I drop bluetooth and phone signal everytime also when you lose bluetooth you cannot re-connect without restarting the phone, at least not on mine. These are not problems that occur everyday or I would have to scrap this phone. I like the fact that Samsung PC Studio 3 is Vista compatible. The up button is a little hard to press without hitting center button compared to the other directions. The slider is easy to do with one hand without feeling like you are going to break phone. I would give this phone an A- as it is like I have stated some things could be better. All in All a GOOD PHONE!!!!!!!!!

Samsung SGH D900 - Great Phone, but Short Battery Life.
Review created: 02/09/08
by:

Likes:
- Big, beautiful display with vibrant colors. Best I've seen.
- Thin and sexy looking phone.
- Slide feature protects the keypad and camera lens
- Camera button takes picture when I press it, not a second or two after (ie: Sony Ericssson)

Dislikes:
- Short Battery life with inconsistant battery charge status
- Contact name and number storage is tedious
- Need bluetooth device to connect to macintosh computers; no USB connect
- Camera Focusing is difficult to control when trying to take closeups

OVERALL: No camera phone to date (Feb.2008) has all the features to make it a perfect camera phone - there is a give and take with ever model currently out there. I like this camera phone better than the Sony Ericsson camera phone that I owned about a month ago. Hope this helps.

It's slim and it takes 3mp pics. But the interface is only average. Compared with my old Sony Ericsson, it seems so clumsy. In fact, I am having trouble finding the end bracket for parenthesis ")" and I need to look in the instructions, but I shouldn't have to do that, ya dig?

This is my first Samsung phone. I have owned it for a week and these are my thoughts:

Pro: thin and light, big and good screen. 3.2 Mega camera.

Pro:
1. poor reception and sound quality.
2. "*", "0", and "#" keys are hard to reach because the bottom of the phone styles as "pop-up."
3. It cannot be setup to save pictures direct to the MicroSD card while taking pictures.
4.JAVA applications cannot be installed through PC, well, there is a way to crack it but it's not convenient and most people wouldn't do it.
5.Alarm clock tone can use default only, no MP3 allowed.

I would prefer Nokia or SonyEricsson in the future since I have had 4 of them and they are very easy to use and function well.

well i used to have the similar phone of the D900 called the samsung T629, offered by tmobile. And i loved it!
but i wanted to get something like it, but BETTER and this was exactly it!
it has a better camera, feel, memory and is even slimmer! The slimest sliding phone out i belive...
it has a few other features as well such as connecting your email account(s) to the phone and some other ones, but i have not yet explored them.

The only downside is that when you want to send a text message, it does not save your sent messages. which can be bothersome at times. Also my provider had to send me all the plug-ins to enable the receving of picture messages, and to use the defualt web browser.

other then that its a great phone, not many people know of it.

The design is very thin and very stylish for any age. The memory is good enough to hold your mp3's and other things that you might want to use to customize your phone. VERY nice graphics. The screen is very clear. Camera isnt that bad either. I would recommend this for the average person that loves to customize their phone to fit their personality and needs. B+
