My kids can operate this! It's lightweight and compact, making it easy to take anywhere. I love the "backlight" feature that adds light to the picture when you're in lower lit areas. It has so many options. Plus, you can watch what you've filmed through your vcr {and record it at the same time}, or download it to your computer to edit it before burning it to disc. Please be reminded that the mini USB cord is not for downloading video file although you can do it. Many other brands do not have this funtion! You can capture picture on the mini dv tapes!! I have not found another that can. Please use it in moderately lit area. Study lamp is good enough. If you are thinking about shooting it using TV emitted light, forget it. Its a great camcorder but please advice that you would need to buy a firewire cable for video image transfer. It does not include as a standard. None of the camcorders in the market include them as standard anyway. Included software is Ulead video editor! costly software! I saw the canon camcorder and the software included sucks. If u need to just record an event and play it back in VCD quality, its a great camcorder. If you want more, I suggest you go for the bulky pro-camcorder. Anything inbetween seems to be just fooling around anyway. Only downside, need memory stick. If it were SD card, would be great! It's a little skimpy on some features but for the price its not bad. I bought this camera for the price but I wish I would have waited and and gotten one with more features for a little more money. I have actually recently bought another camera, a Sony HI8/Digital 8 camera that I think has more features and a much better picture. If you like small cameras this one is nice.
