I liked that the product was as discribed and they offered it in true auction-style. This allowed me to get the best price on a factory sealed product. Alought it was not dobble boxed like some seller do on these type of items to protect while in shipping transit, the item arrived in great condition.
I wanted a combination device since some of my favorite movies are in HD and this does a great job. 'Grand Prix' in HD is like watching a different movie because you can see so much more detail. Even standard DVDs look better. As with all players of this type it is important to get the latest firmware updates.
Bought this unit because i have some HD-DVD's and will be buying just Blu-Rays now i guess. Unit works as well as any other computer driven device (meaning it's picky like a computer)Seems like all of the "NEW" dvd units take forever to just open the drawer to load a DVD. Unit has great picture and upconverts regular DVD's great. In fact some movies look as good upconverted as compared to blu-ray or HD-DVD depending on the movie. The only problem i have is after about 5 minutes the unit freezes up and i have to turn it off and reload it for it to play. After i've done this it works perfectly. Does anyone know what the problem is?
The format war forced me to buy this player. I had a hd-dvd player before and that broke. Now I have dozens of hd-dvd disks that I don't want to go to waste but I also have to move forward and recognize that blu-ray is the future.
The sound quality is not as good as the Lg bh200 that I had but I'll live.
Glad we were able to get it at the price we did. It has been a good player. New updates came out yesterday and it was easy to download.d Worth the money.
I like the fact that you can play both HD DVD & Blu ray we haven't use it that much so my review is limited but the picture is good and it's easy to use looks great on my XBR . Price wise I see it for the same price in the stores but at the time I bought it the price was a bit lower .
Fence-sitters of the format war, sit no longer! Samsung's BD-UP5000 Duo Player is the best way to conveniently enjoy all formats. Just be sure you know about its quirks before you buy.
First off, the picture quality is outstanding. HD-DVD and Blu-ray come through in dazzling 1080p as you'd expect. The big surprise comes when you play an older SD DVD; the quality is dramatically improved by the HQV Reon, which is one of the best available upconverting chips.
The 24Hz video output makes a subtle improvement when used with a compatible display. Unfortunately, a few HD-DVD titles refuse to output 24Hz with this player.
This player's biggest drawback is HD audio support. First, let me say that if your audio output is SPDIF (toslink optical or digital coax) you won't be missing anything yet; multichannel Dolby Digital and DTS work just fine.
However, if you have an HDMI-capable receiver, you'll be disappointed to discover that the BD-UP5000 neither decodes nor bitstreams any of the HD audio formats except PCM. Rumor has it this will fixed with a firmware update in June 2008, but there's no guarantee of that.
In summation, this is an excellent player that'll handle any format you throw at it, and make them look beautiful; just don't expect advanced audio formats yet.
Let me start with I enjoy ebay, it's fun and you have great bargains. WHY NOT ASK FOR A REVIEW OF THE SELLER blowout digital worst experience I have had on ebay Purchased the Samsung player 4/3/08 received my refund 5/7/08. blowout media power seller rating 98.3% who would of thought unless you look at the complaints.26,597 sales 472 complaints. If you take the time to read the complaints you find the communication with blowout digital is awful. I can understand an item being broken, but when you do not return e mails this company does not care about complaints because they do not lose. I had to file a claim with Paypal to get any action from blowout digital. They only time they would answer my e mails was when i filed the complaint with Paypal and when I escalated the complaint with PayPal. The reason they do not care it cost them nothing, refunded my money a month later & I had to pay shipping to return the Item, so that means I am the loser. No product for amonth no money for a month and I had additional cost. ebay losing nothing & blowout digital loses nothing. If I file a negative against this company they can file a negative against me and I have done nothing wrong. ebay will not do anything to this company because they are a Power Seller. Any company that does not answer complaints is BAD.
Even though HD-DVD will soon be a thing of the past, the price of this Samsung combo player was a steal retailing at 1k clams. I just purchased a 52" Samsung LCD and of course I needed the BluRay to enjoy the full benefits of viewing entertainment. Also won on eBay was a BOSE CineMate system for the ultimate in entertainment. This Samsung BD-UP5000 is excellent. Easy to use and a must if you desire the best. The picture quality is crystal clear. I would recommend this BluRay/HD-DVD player to all who seek great entertainment. Good luck to all and happy bidding!

After setting up the equipment and not being able to make it work, I was extremely frustrated and decided to work on it the next day and still no luck. I was just about to contact the Seller when I thought about changing the batteries. That did the trick! Since I did not have a Blu-ray disc to try it out, I put in Robert Plant and Jimmy Page's "No Quarter" and it is unreal! It's just like being at the show. The color is unbelievable! I am so happy I bought this model so my old CDs can still be viewed and in an even better context.
I love my new Blu-ray/Hd dvd player. The blu-ray and HD dvd's player on this player can't be more clear and the sound is off the chain! Thank you for your understanding, your patience and thank you for a fantasic product. Well, you and Samsung....smile. Enoy your stay on Ebay and life.
i am also happy with my player i have 10 hd dvd movies and i didnt want rebuy them, i agree with the guy above me they could have done a better job with the remote control, but it is still a excellent player
The Samsung BD-UP5000 is without a doubt the best combo player on the market. High-def disc picture reproduction is incredible and the player's standard-def DVD upconverting is as good as I've seen. HD DVD picture reproduction is a definite step up from my XBOX 360 add-on (even when displaying at 1080p over the 360's VGA cables). On the downside, you can't adjust picture settings through the player's menu without stopping playback, making image comparison between settings difficult. In addition, updating the player's firmware took about 45 minutes over cable modem, also frustrating. Overall however, the player is great--I'm very happy with my purchase. Soon you'll be able to buy HD-DVDs at rock bottom prices, so I'd still recommend this player despite the fact that the format war is over.
