Industry Reviews Gr 5-7 Two books that describe the lives of two modern-day, risk-taking adventurers. These astronauts planned, studied, and applied themselves, working hard to achieve their goals. Each book opens with the moment of glory and then proceeds with a chronological presentation that details family, schooling, training, married life, and life after the astronaut program. There is perhaps more information than average students need or want to know, such as the spouses, homes, and occupations of Armstrong's married siblings; however, much of the detail, especially of astronaut training and flight, is fascinating and enlightening. While emphasizing the many positive aspects of these two people, the authors also give information on some of their human frailties, such as their divorces and Armstrong's commercial ventures. The text is clear and readable. One or two black-and-white photos of fair quality accompany each chapter. Both subjects are worthwhile role models about whom quality, up-to-date material is welcome. [This] book on Sally Ride is a lively account of her work as astronaut and astrophysicist. The focus is on the excitement of the training period and then the rising tension of the launching, the shuttle flight, and the landing. A fascinating chapter describes what it is like for an astronaut to live in microgravity for nearly a week--How does she eat, sleep, dress, wash, go to the bathroom?--and Ride's personal achievement is set within the general history of the space shuttle program. . . . [The biography) includes full chapter notes, a bibliography, chronology, and occasional black-and-white photographs. Annotation copyright H.W. Wilson Company. Rochman
