After 50 Years of SciFi, I met Scalzi's Writings
Review created: 05/05/09

The writing of John Scalzi and the Universe's he has created have revived my belief that there still is GOOD Science Fiction being written and published.
After becoming disillusioned with the multi-book series' of stories about wizards or whatever that don't come to a conclusion but force you to buy more and more books just to have the story end. Poorly written at best and jumbles of intertwining ideas, using as many words as possible to convince the reader that there is actually merit to the story. This, in my opinion, had become the norm of Science Fiction.
Re-reading my favorites: Heinlien, Asimov, Smith, Blish, Anderson, Hogan, et al and even the one book wonders like Hubbard and Herbert (my apologies to those two author's fans, but frankly "Dune" and "Battlefield Earth" were the penultimates of their story telling) I have become able to recite whole paragraphs from memory. I started with "Red Planet" in the 50's along with "Mystery of Saddle Mountain" and was hooked. You would have found a SciFi title on my night stand for 25 years. But then, it seemed that the area just dried up.
My son was introduced to SciFi from my library of paperbacks when he was a boy and now he returned the favor by giving me a copy of "Old Man's War" for Christmas. From the first page, I was enthralled.
Scalzi's ability to use conversations between characters (ala Heinlien) to develop the story and add depth to those characters at the same time, is amazing. His easy going style, unpretentious and captivating, is marvelous.
"old Man's War", "Ghost Brigades" and "Last Colony" compromise the Old Man's War Trilogy, but "Zoes Tale" and "The Sagan Diaries" are inter-twined books. Each of the Trilogy is one story, standing alone but the entire set of five become a tale you hate to see end.
One a scale of 1-10, these fascinating works of SciFi(and Scalzi and his other books) are 20's!

  The Sagan Diary
Review created: 04/02/09

So far I have read four of Mr. Scalzi's Old Man's War books and a couple of others by him and this is the worst book of the lot by far. He says at the end
that he wrote it because someone donated $5000 to a charity to get him to do it. I hate to say it, but that someone should have asked for his money back. All of Mr. Scalzi's other books were excellent. This one is boring. It is
essentially an exremely bland diary written by one of the central characters,
Jane Sagan, and when I say bland, I mean BLAND! Sorry Mr. Scalzi, but this book is just plain boring.
