Synopsis In 17th-century Italy, half of noble-born women are forced to become nuns to avoid the steep cost of marriage dowries. Serefina, a tempestuous 16-year-old girl with a rapturous singing voice, has been sent to the Santa Caterina convent to end her romance with a young musician. The convent's dispensary mistress, Sister Suora Zuana, is given the task of calming the girl and easing her into the life of the convent, but Serefina will have none of it: she is determined to escape back to the arms of her lover. Both women are wonderfully complex characters, and Sarah Durant evokes their passions and philosophies as vividly as she does the cultural customs of the nunnery.

Publisher's Note Condemned by sixteenth-century demands for lucrative dowries in order to marry, young Serafina is ripped from an illicit love affair and confined in a Renaissance Italy convent, a situation against which she passionately rebels and reminds the convent's doctor of her own unhappy early years. 200,000 first printing.
Industry Reviews "Dunant's an accomplished storyteller, and this is a rich and rewarding novel....A cast of complex characters breathes new life into the classic star-crossed lovers trope while affording readers a look at a facet of Renaissance life beyond the far more common viscounts and courtesans." (starred review) (06/01/2009)
"Without undercutting religious faith or denying it importance, SACRED HEARTS is most moving in its portrayal of the struggle faced by women who have been forced into a life not of their choosing....While Dunant's story is romantically satisfying, she does acknowledge that the perception of a happy 'ending' is subjective, and thus raises some philosophically challenging questions."
