Album Notes Personnel: Frank Zappa, Ike Willis (vocals, guitar); Denny Walley (guitar); Peter Wolf, Tommy Mars (keyboards, synthesizers); Arthur Barrow (bass); Vinnie Colaiuta (drums); Ed Mann (percussion). Recorded live at Saarbrucken, West Germany on September 3, 1978. Formerly only available on vinyl as a bootleg, this live album was recorded in what was then West Germany, on September 3, 1978, at an outdoor festival. This is the hard-rockin' side of Zappa--guitars and keyboards dominate the band's sound, and the jazz side of his music is toned down a bit. While his satire isn't as subtle or weird as it was in the '60s, he still tosses well-deserved barbs at all things shallow or trendy in late-20th century American society. While there's a perceptible distance in the recording quality, all the instruments and vocals are sharp and clear. Guitarist Ike Willis gets in some soulful vocalizing, the band is tight and funny, there are hot licks aplenty, and the CD contains almost 74 minutes of music! Highly recommended for devotees of late-period Zappa.
