Not the best Handheld, Still Fun.

The NeoGeo Pocket Color is a fantastic little handheld for what it is - A ten year old system with a tiny library of games. The Unit itself is great in everyway save for one, the most important factor of any handheld - the SCREEN. It is not backlit and I find it intensely difficult to see indoors. A backlit screen, like the modern gameboy advance, has a special type of light that distributes light through the back of the screen evenly. This makes the screen bright, vivid and easy to play in badly lit situations. It is possible to modify a neo geo pocket color to have a frontlit screen, this is not a difficult procedure if you know how to solder and have access to a frontlight that is the appropriate size. It is common to harvest the frontlight from particular early models of gameboy advance sp's.
The body and size of the system is great, it carries the same style as a sega gamegear but it is much smaller and lighter. The battery life is amazingly good, it'll go for weeks on two double AA's, this is soley due to the lack of a backlight. The most notable feature of the system is the clicky joystick, it is a joy to use, but can sometimes be a little sloppy in fighting games.
The Game Library is small, due to the buyout of the Neo Geo Corporation by Playmore during the NGPC's infancy. Although the library is small it is substantially good. There are very few BAD games for the NGPC, in fact you would have to try really hard to find a bad game, and if you happen to love slot machine games, there aren't ANY bad games at all! Although the library is great, it is genre limited, populated mostly by fighting games. The fighting games are great through, pocket sized versions of their popular grown up counterparts, King Of Fighters, Samurai Showdown, etc. these games are fun and perfect for a two minute gaming session on the bus or at school/work. There are ambassadors to the RPG genre such as Biomotor Unitron and Card Fighter's Clash, but there really aren't too many titles that stray from the fighter genre. A few notable ones - Sonic Pocket adventure, Metal Slug first and second mission, Card Fighter's Clash (capcom or SNK version), Bubble Bobble.
Finally, and most importantly - the nerd factor. This is the part of the review where I diagnose the level of nerdiness, possible c**k blockage, and overall necesity to own this piece of gaming history. First of all, if you want a ten year old handheld gaming system that no one has ever heard of, then you are a nerd.Bust out some Bawls energy drinks and go install some open source firmware on a lynksis router, cause there's no escaping it, you're a nerd. Well now that that's out of the way let's see how much you need a NGPC. Well, it's cool looking, has some unique features and games, and comes in an assortment of nifty colors. On the other hand, this thing will never get you laid, you will look like a weirdo playing it in public, and the screen is so bad you will be forced to face your immortal enemy, the sun, in order to play it. After weighing the pros and cons, I can say that this is a solid investment to add to your collection even though it may or may not et that much playing time. It's really up to you how much you want to play this, it is solely for the hardcore, the rest of us can just bust out a psp when things get boring and install a neo geo pocket
