  "Funniest Film / Ever!"

In my opinion this is as I stated in the title . . . especially when you consider when it was made . . . the peak of the *Cold - War* . . .

The cast is extraordinary, and despite being filmed on the West Coast you're sure it was made on Cape Cod . . . And, yes, Whittaker Walt / is the same Carl Reiner / way before "Ocean's 11, 12, 13, 14, or 15" . . . Not to mention Eva Marie [ who, for sure, looks like a *SAINT* / to me ] . . .

Buy this DVD . . . the back story from Norman Jewison makes owning it very worth-while . . . Jewison even went to Russia for the opening . . . they loved it, and hissed @ the confrontation, and then cried during the rescue near the end . . .

Best, [ dsm8488 ] . . .

This is one of the funniest movies I have ever watched. I have loved it for years. The ending could be a little mushy, but it gets me every time! Who doesn't to save a little boy from falling and solve the Cold War at the same time?! Some of the best comic performances of all time!

The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming

This film hit the theaters 1966, and generally reflected the paranoia of a possible Russian invasion at the time. It is a well done piece with an all star cast. Alan Arkin shows his exceptional talant as an actor. With Brian Keith, Jonathan Winters, John Phillip Law, and Carl Reiner, it is well deserving for a place in one's collection. For a collector and historian of vintage cars and collectibles, the movie has some of these pieces, like the early crank telephones and switch board, boats, planes, and cars. Even an early Harley Davison with sidecar. The film is a must see and the comedy still carries to this day. Credit goes to Norman Jewison for this excellent work !

Hilarious - Small Community Befriends Russian Submarine
Review created: 10/12/09

Movie cast include Brian Keith, Alan Arkin, and Sid Ceaser. Sleepy little fishing community wakes up one morning to discover a lost Russian submarine has landed. Outlandish and bizzare community members behavior give the Russians a second thought of wanting to take over US soil. The police force is remanicant of a 1920 clown squad. Humor abounds and in the end the Americans assist the Russians escape from USAF fighter jets - once both sides learn they are more alike than different.

Hollywood should never try to do a remake of this movie because it cannot be improved on. The casting is perfect. Even though such an incident is outlandish, each character is believable (even the absurd ones).

It was made during the cold war (1965), and it really is a "peacenik" movie.
Even for a "hawkish right-winger" like myself, I consider it one of my favorite movies. No one should be put off by watching it.

Most props are quite good. Special Effects are not needed. The quality of the cinematography is flawless and looks as good as anything made to-day.

This is one of the best movies ever made. It is almost too funny.

This is a great comedy film. And with such a stellar cast and excellent screen writing it couldn't have been otherwise. Although this film is an oldie - it was released in 1966! - it is till as immensely entertaining and funny today as it was then - a must see for anyone who enjoys excellent comedy.

excellent movie....I introduced my kids to it and they thought it was the best. Old movie, but I didn't have to worry about sex or violence for the youngsters....Why don't they make movies like this anymore. I recommend it for any family.

I saw this at the drive-in, when I was 16 in 66. To this day, it remains one of my all time favorite movies. Just hysterical. It calls to mind, the air raid drills we had in school, in case the Russians attacked. They made us get under our desks, because desks would protect us from the atom bomb. What high school kid today would believe any of this or even the cold war?

Great way to introduce Cold War and Stereotyping
Review created: 03/09/07

I saw this movie years ago and now that I teach high school history I thought it would be a great opener to teaching about the Cold War, irrational fear, mob hysteria, and how the media can add to stereotyping. My students loved it! I teach in a very diverse high school and students from Eastern Europe wanted to borrow it to show their families. I loaned it out when we were done with the unit and all responses came back positive. Some students said their parents from Ukraine or Russia, etc., had the same fears about the USA as the USA had about their countries. This opened communication between the students and their parents and grandparents. Since viewing the film we've had many discussions about stereotyping, racism, prejudice and how every group of people in the United States has either had family members, or themselves experience these from the Irish to the SE Asians and more.

The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming
Review created: 12/10/06

An excellent film for us Baby boomers. And if you remember the cold war, and the big fear of the Russians. This film has an all-star cast: Carl Reiner, Alan Arkin, Brian Keith, Johnathan Winters. It all starts when a russian submarine runs aground on a sand bar. A small party of russians leave the submarine to get a motorboat to pull the submarine loose. But in the course of this, the locals are all involved. It is every man for himself. Lets defend the island. Close to the end of the film, there is a confrontation with the submarine commander and the locals. World War III is about to break loose. Nothing brings people together, like a tradgedy. And this film has that too. A small tragedy brings the russians and americans together to unite them. In the meantime you have the US Military getting involved.
By the end of the film, you remember one thing. The laughter the tears, and your own family all sitting around once again to watch a family oriented film, that brings you close again.
