Russian Lacquer Legends - Most informative on subject

Although this book is currently out of print, it remains one of the foremost authorities on the subject of Russian Lacquer Boxes. Along with volume II, the author presents a very thorough description of this meticulous artwork and the history behind it and the lore, or fairytales, many of the designs depict. The author writes in a style that makes reading this book easy and not too technical, a very enjoyable read. Many Russian artists have also complemented her book and comment that she has really introduced this art form to the West. The pictures are wonderful and really help to illustrate the boxes. In my opinion, Lucy Maxym, and also David Armstrong, are the best authors on this subject and should be acquired by anyone interested in collecting or just learning about Russian Lacquer artwork. A most complete overview is given in Volume I; Volume II gives more information on the specific fairy tales and stories depicted on the boxes.
