The scenes, the wardrove, and the people.... thats all great but when you listen to the narrator and main character is awful. they are so boring and the tone of the voices is downright depressing. i tried to watch this with other russians and they rather watch anything else but this. super boring after 20-30 minutes.... this is also too long of a movie. worst than a root canal.

This is a Russian film in the finest tradition of Russian cinema, glorious music and dramatic encounters, the classical world of St. Petersburgh recaptured, with a unique and continuous movement that is never broken or suspended, thus embodying a strangely subtle impact and power.

Great movieFor anyone with even a passing interest in anything Russian, this movie is an amazing room by room walk through the Czarist Hermitage palace and museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. One take from start to finish - amazing.

I really liked Russian Ark. It proudly sits in my collection. That the movie is one continuous shot is amazing. The costumes and music is beautiful.
The movie is about a guy, the narrator, who wakes up and finds himself at the Hermitage in the 1700's. You don't know how he got there. Is he dead? Is he dreaming?
As he walks the rooms he travels through time via the Hermitage. As he goes through rooms you see Catherine the Great, The Romanov's, protecting the art during WWII, present day. Just to name a few.
The movie is a little slow but I think the idea is great. I think if people do not like it, a bit of the problem is not knowing the history of Russia. The movie does take for granted that you know who the major players in Russian history are so you can immediatly tell who the narrator is looking at.
This movie does not EXPLAIN everyone. It is a movie celebrating Russian history in a unique way. I give it two thumbs up!
