Running With Scissors by Augusten Burroughs (2006, Paperback, Reprint)

Great read if you like family dramas and good humor. Author Augusten Burroughs tells of his life growing up, with a mentally ill mother, largely absent and uncaring father, and being more or less adopted by his mother's absolutely crazy doctor and equally bizarre family. It's like watching a train wreck or serious accident, you are repulsed at times but just can't pull away from it. How does someone from such a background and surroundings make it through? How do they survive mentally intact themselves? Well, obviously it helps to have a sense of humour, and Augusten Burroughs never lost his. I don't think without his constant writing and journaling he could have survived, and I think it is a very good book for writers themselves to read. I gives one much courage and hope that they too can survive anything.

This has to be the worst book I have ever read. I bought it in an airport while traveling, thinking "if they made it a movie, it must be worth reading!" NOT! Bizzare, unbeleivable, and too horrifying to even be funny! I have a policy of finishing all books I start (afterall, you never know if they will get better) but this was a struggle. If I had possession of anything else to read on the airplane, I would have tossed this book. This book is ridiculous! Even assuming that this is a moderately factual telling, the fact that people could ever live like this and not be locked up is impossible to believe. In addition to being an awful story, it is poorly written. I can manage to get through a well-written book that I dislike, but having to struggle through this poorly written nightmare streched my advanced reading skills. When I finished the book, I was angry for wasting my time and so annoyed by the dreadful writing that I wanted to throw the book (preferrably at the person who allowed such a waste of paper and ink to be published)! Maybe I can pawn it off on someone else who wants to read a badly written, awful, terrible, no good, very bad book!

I love to read. I am especially drawn to read the book before I see the movie. Time to time I like to compare the two.
The book was interesting. I was a little unsettled by the ending. Some of the material was not quite what I was expecting. The character held my interest. And, I did pass the book on to another reader.

I love the book because the imagery and detail is so out of the ordinary but so refreshing. It's very honest in a simple way that brings complex thoughts. It may be a little graphic but for me it was a good read. Great for reading anywhere.

This had to be the strangest book I have ever read. I couldn't even get through it. I rented the video just to see what happend to the writer and that was just as bad. I bought this book because a friend said it was good. I didn't like it at all.

Bought it for a friend. We saw the movie and my friend wanted to read the book. No problems getting it.

I've just started reading the book, and so far, I'm enjoying it. I bought the book, because I had recently seen the movie, loved it, and of course, the book is always better than the movie. After I finish with Running with scissors, I will be looking for other books written by Augustein Burroughs.

I decided to buy the book because it was recommended by a friend. I thought it was very wierd but I liked it. I am now looking to buy the dvd. The movie came out in October.
