Antiwar activists, Laiti and Hirsch blew up a napalm lab in 1971..they became fugitives. They run from state to state trying to stay one step ahead of the law. The eldest son, River Phoenix wants to stop running and put down roots. He is running from a past that is not his own and each "change" in his life brings more hardship and heartache. He makes the decision to "stay" while his parents have to run....bittersweet... knowing he can never contact his family again. Gives a new meaning to dysfunctional...
