Synopsis After a hiatus of 21 years, Stephen R. Donaldson returns to his monumentally popular epic fantasy series about the Land with this initial volume in a projected quartet. At the conclusion of the previous book, WHITE GOLD WIELDER, Thomas Covenant sacrificed himself to defeat the sinister Lord Foul, and his lover, Dr. Linden Avery, used the wild magic of Covenant's white gold wedding ring in conjunction with the Staff of Law to cleanse the Land of corruption. Ten years have passed in the real world while over 3500 have gone by in the Land, and Lord Foul is stirring once more. This time, he acts through Covenant's son Roger, using him to kidnap Covenant's insane ex-wife and Linden's adopted son Jeremiah. Now Foul holds them hostage somewhere in the Land. Linden, who has also been transported there, believes that the Staff of Law is key both to rescuing them and to healing the Land, now shrouded in an evil substance called Kevin's Dirt. Unfortunately, the Staff has been missing for centuries, and the only way to recover it involves a dangerous journey through time.
