Harvest Moon + RPG Action = Rune Factory

As a HUGE fan of both RPG games and a Simulation video games, I must say that this is a bullseye for my tastes.

Harvest Moon fans will get a taste of some RPG action while RPG fans will get a healthy sample of a farming simulation (a la Harvest Moon).

+++ POSITIVES +++

+ BEAUTIFUL GRAPHICS - The cartoonish characters of Harvest Moon are replaced with anime-style characters. The level of detail is incredible from the backgrounds to the menu screens. Graphics are important to me, and I must say that I'm VERY impressed with amount of work that went into ever last pixel on my TV. There are also several animation scenes when meeting woman (and during the title) that remind me a lot of Tales of Symphonia sequences. Absolutely stunning!

+ LOTS TO DO - This is the understatement of the century. Let's see: farming, wooing women, participating in holiday events, exploring dungeons, forging weapons, helping others, solving mysteries, exploring, evloving monsters...(and I'm just scratching the surface). Let's just say that if you become bored with this game, there will likely never be a game that will satisfy you. In fact, I'd be more inclined that people will complain becuase there's TOO much to do.

+ EXTREMELY HIGH REPLAY VALUE - Like all simulation games, there's a good chance that even when you 'beat' this game, you'll likely start over again and choose a different route. With an infinite amount of paths to choose, you'll be curious enough to replay this game again and again. If you meausre a game's worth by the number of hours you put into it, your $50 will be well spent.

+ SOUNDS - Usually, I could care less about the sounds/music in a game, but one thing I noticed are the fine details given to various sounds. From the sweeping of a broom to the squeaky opening of a door, I feel like I'm actually there listening to the ambient sounds of a town. Very nice!

+ GOOD PLAY CONTROL - Some may disagree, but the play control is much better in this game than many other similar games. You're able to set up 'shortcut keys' to access your tools/items at a quicker pace, resulting in less redudant button pushes. Even putting items in the shipping bin are made easy with double-clicking. This is a BIG improvement!

+ RPG/SIMULATION COMBO - As a big Harvest Moon fan, I concluded long ago that it was going to be tough to improve on the HM setup, but Rune Factory has gone above and beyond that. The process of leveling up with every swing of the axe or sword or every cooked egg, gives you incentive to keep it up. Even if you don't like to fish or mix potions, there's a reason to do it now. You wouldn't think that adding RPG to a Simulation based game would be possible, but they did it!

--- NEGATIVES ---

- NO INTERACTIVE PLAY - If I have to find something that could be missing, it'd be some Wi-fi connectivity. It would be nice to have some online features (a la Animal Crossing), but maybe this'll be an option in future titles.

- SLOW LOADING TIME - Nothing terrible, but the typical 5 sec. wait can be expected when jumping from scene to scene. About the same as Harvest Moon: MM.

CONCLUSION: There's no denying it, Harvest Moon fans will definitely enjoy the new additions and RPG lovers may just get a taste for HM. From it's superior graphics to its HIGH replay value, Rune Factory is one of the better games I've played in a while. Sorry Harvest Moon, I've got a new best friend...

I bought this for my teenage son to play, he loves to play this game as a stress reliever from all the blood and gore games that he usually plays. This still has you battle the beasties but it is not really violent. It is amazing that this is a Harvest Moon game, the amount of things available to do in this game is mind boggling. I play the "old fashioned" version of Harvest Moon on the gamecube and the difference in game play is so vast.... The game can go on and on, we really like that, the last game I bought for the 360 he beat in a matter of days and was done ($60 bucks out the door).
I highly recommend this game for anyone wanting a good RPG game that isn't necessarily violent, just good fun.

  Decent farming / adventuring game

This game is primarily a Harvest Moon spin-off, but also has some Suikoden-like qualities to it and a healthy portion of crafting. It's a waste of time to explain the Harvest Moon aspect; there's really nothing new here on that front. The other aspects are more interesting.

There are a lot of characters in this game, and it takes some work to add them all to the village. As you talk to people and complete sections of the game, more characters will arrive, which gives you access to new items and areas. The game is very open in this sense. You can unlock new characters and get new items at different times and in almost any order depending on how you play.

Crafting is a pretty major part of the game. You can collect items that can be used for cooking, smithing, gardening, and creating accessories. With the right items and skill level, you can upgrade your tools so that maintaining your crops takes less time.

When you've got the right weapons and equipment, you can enter a variety of dungeons and fight monsters. These monsters can be captured and kept as pets that will help you around the farm or join you in the dungeons.

All in all, the game is enjoyable. Sometimes it gets tedious, but then a new item or area opens that adds some variety. Anyone who enjoyed Harvest Moon would also enjoy Rune Factory. It has a healthy portion of battling to take the monotony out of raising crops.

  Rune Factory Rant
Review created: 11/20/09

I ended up buying this game because a best friend had it, and I borrowed it for a while, and then eventually she couldn't get me off of it, I ended up buying one for my own playing pleasure. I have to admit at first you get hooked, but when you first start out you aren't able to do much since your health dies pretty quick. I love the art, Cinnamon, Candy, and Eunice are my absolute fav characters they are so kawaii! I love the gameplay, the feel of it is definitely Harvest Moon orientated, but they add on dungeons and monster fighting to make it fun. I think this idea was a great one, but whoever decided that they should only give us a measly amount of "hours" in game to do everything needs to be shot. Time should stop in dungeons like it does in houses and whatnot. I am not able to talk to everyone, water, and pick my crops not fight through the dungeons like I want in that little amount of time they give you throughout the day. Other than that the storyline is cute, the graphics are great, and the characters are hilarious. I have to admit though, that the storyline progresses VERY slow. I'm in my 2nd year and am only in the snow ruins. -sigh- And last but not least, you better level up alot, because the monsters in each ruin are ferocious....and I had to die a couple times. Aside from that I recommend you this game, especially if you're into Harvest Moon!

i actually use all the hours of the day!

i had originally wanted to get the regular harvest moon for the wii (ya know, the one where you can choose between being a guy/girl. i thought that was a nice option) but people i live with protested saying it was annoyingly boring, so i decided to try and find something a little more interesting... well i decided on Rune Factory. and yes it is less boring than harvest moon. i actually use all the hours of the day instead of going to bed at 4 pm because theres nothing to do (talking about in-game time here)

the only things i complain about is A- i wish the main character wasn't so ugly, B- the "runey system" is horrible and unneccesary, and takes up way too much time to keep up with... and C- the "RP" gets used up way too fast, especially if your doing farming, fighting, cooking, making weapons, and potions (ect ect), all in the same day. did they really need to have everything you do suck up RP?

The environment is more advanced than the DS versions, you can see the changes all around you and best of all the bath house events and the CG movies. Good game.

  Restores the Harvest Moon series
Review created: 06/12/09

I bought this game and I have to say I was skeptical at first- I had never played Rune Factory games before, and my brother wasn't thrilled with the concept. But my brother picks it up and manages to play it for hours every night- Unlike "Wonderful Life" or "Magical Melody", which he quickly grew sick of. Bottom line is there is plenty to do in this game- The storyline and monster aspect actually makes the game very interesting. Buy this game if you're a Harvest Moon or casual rpg fan.
