The great Japanese director Akira Kurosawa wrote the original screenplay which was later adapted for American audiences. Francis Ford Coppola and Tom Luddy of American Zoetrope suggested Andrei Konchalovsky, who was fresh from his native Russia, as a possible director. Konchalovsky met with Kurosawa in Japan and "Runaway Train" was born.
Konchalovsky's other directing credits include the 1979 epic "Siberiade" and "Maria's Lovers" (his American feature film directorial debut). Konchalovsky's was also a co-writer on Tarkovsky's "Andrei Rublev."
