Rumpole a La Carte by John Clifford Mortimer

Here’s a collection of six Rumpole tales in one volume. It starts off with Rumpole a la Carte where Rumpole defends a famous chef, when a live mouse is served up with a dinner. Rumpole and the Summer of Discontent takes place during a time when everyone everywhere, is seemingly ready to go on strike. In Rumpole and the Right to Silence, the case is complicated by a secret society. In Rumpole at Sea, Hilda gets Rumpole to sea to give him a break from his bad streak of luck at court, only to find Rumpole confined on board with the dreaded Judge Graves, who is also on vacation. In Rumpole and the Quacks, the side stories are just as interesting as Rumpole’s defense of a doctor, who (in the end) seems able to handle things himself. We get a very unusual look at Rumpole on the other side of the fence, when Rumpole prosecutes, in Rumpole for the Prosecution. This book is a delightful mixture of Rumpole tales that any Rumpole fan would enjoy!
