Surprisingly, this receiver was more of an upgrade for me in regards to movie dialogue than in music CD's, etc. I can hear speech/dialogue MUCH clearer since swapping this out for my prior Pioneer VSX-1015TX. For lp's, music cd's, etc they are very comparable, virtually the same. My surround speakers don't seem to get as..."driven" as much with this vs. the Pioneer, but when they do the sound is excellent (Star Wars VI-Sith, yikes/wow!).
So, since I picked this up used on eBay for $400 and I can sell the Pioneer for around $200-250 I guess it was worth the upgrade. One caveat: oh my goodness, please know this (i didn't!): "V1" button on the remote (and memory on the component) is permanently fixed, it's non-(re)assignable. This took me forever to figure out, as I set up my TV on "V1" as most people would. The stupid volume remote buttons won't control volumne (silly!) and you cannot assign coaxial/optic inputs even (ARGGHH!). It's "reserved for a Rotel DVD player only". Give me a break! So skip using V1 and just use V2-V5 which are all user-assignable. Another thing...the On-screen display only works using composite (yellow single RCA) or s-video. This also took me forever to figure out why I couldn't get the dang OSD to work: I had my TV hooked up through COMPONENT cables (best pic, minus HDMI which this doesn't have). I couldn't get to the OSD setup screens for the longest time until I finally figured this out. So, since my DVR/Sat is via component cable to TV I had to also hookup a composite cable to the back of the rcvr and input it into video-3 input on my TV (others already assigned/hooked up with PS3, etc). It's a little bit of a pain to have to remember to switch TV to V3 to get the OSD to work but it does work.
There is no "audessy" or automatic room mic setup with this like most new rcvr's have. No biggie, if you're an audiophile use a Radio Shack soundmeter or, if not, just use your ears as to what sounds best. It's not too tough to dial in correct speaker spread.
Overall, a 4. Rotel, drop the stupid V1 non-assignable thing, it's retarded.
I would also like 3 optical inputs instead of just 2, but that's being a bit picky I guess. Coaxial digital input is decent so I use one of the 2 of those.
P.S. It does not run very hot, a plus these days as Onkyo and others seem to be running verrrrry hot on their new rcvr's.

The best 5.1 receivr out there

This unit was $1300 new and is still miles better than anything new under $1000. Upgradeable to 7.1 if you need that...Do not hesitate to buy one of these over anything out there for the money. If you spend $400 at best buy you will bring home junk....
