Album Notes This recording received the 1998 Gramophone magazine award for "Best Opera Recording." 'Il turco in Italia' is not, as might be assumed, a sequel to 'L'italiana in Algieri' but a remarkably modern comedy that is usually described as a forerunner to Pirandello. The Poeta is writing a comedy which is in fact the opera which is happening around him. The shrewish Fiorilla is married to the elderly Geronio and, naturally, has a quite serious flirtation with the visiting Turk of the title. The Turk's abandoned first love as well as Fiorilla's (platonic) lover add further complications. The opera provided Maria Callas with a rare foray into comedy and, despite being largely devoted to ensembles, it sinks or swims on the ability of the prima donna to embody a huge range of emotions from comic flirtation to near tragedy before the happy ending. Cecilia Bartoli is, for the opera's first time in stereo, the successor in every way to Callas and she is supported at every turn by a splendid cast of experienced Rossinians. Riccardo Chailly conducts the critical edition of the score in a very full text. The largely Italian cast and the forces of La Scala ensure that this very Italian opera is presented with maximum effect.
