Ronin (DVD, 1999, Special Edition; Contemporary Classics)

I purchased this movie to add to my automotive action DVD/VHS collection. I had all the classics - Bullit, Vanishing Point, Two Lane Blacktop, etcetera. This movie was recommended in Octane Magazine's "10 top coolest auto movies", and it does not disappoint for car chase scenes.

On top of this, it is a very good action movie, filmed all over France. Whether you like action movies, car movies, or both - this is a great selection.

This is a film that at the begining leaves you guessing on what is going on for the first 30 minutes. Once the movie gets started thier is lots of action and some great European car chaces. Their is some suttle comedy with comments between the actors. Overall the plot and action hold your attention for the whole film.

This is one of my favorite action movies of all time. I like the mysterious type storyline that leaves you wondering a little but doesn't leave you out, I think it's a good balance. I also like the action scenes because they are not nearly as ridiculous as most action movies these days but they are engaging and done with a lot less special effects equipment. They strike one more as possible, yet unlikely whereas action scenes in a lot of movies are downright preposterous. This is a classic.

I am biased because I like Robert DeNiro in most everything he does but here goes. A group of men with highly developed skills are called to a meeting in a deserted warehouse in Paris. Sam (Robert De Niro), an American, may be ex-CIA. Vincent (Jean Reno), the terminally cool Frenchman, is a mystery. Russian computer whiz Gregor (Stellan Skarsgaard) is presumably ex-KGB, and Spence (Sean Bean), a British demolitions man, and Larry (Skipp Suddith), another Yank, round out the team. They've been hired by the IRA, through liaison Deirdre (Natascha McElhone), to steal a briefcase of unknown contents somewhere in Europe. As the unit races from one spectacular location on the French Riviera to another, the body count mounts, some Russian gangsters get into the act, and the betrayals come fast and furious. In a rare comic moment, Sam stitches up his own bullet wound, and asks a friend to finish before he passes out. RONIN features an exceptional cast, sumptuous locations, and the kind of realistic car chases and action scenes. Robert De Niro stars as an American intelligence operative adrift in irrelevance since the end of the Cold War--much like a masterless samurai, a.k.a. "ronin." With his services for sale, he joins a renegade, international team of fellow covert warriors with nothing but time on their hands. Their mission, as defined by the woman who hires them (Natascha McElhone), is to get hold of a particular suitcase that is equally coveted by the Russian mafia and Irish terrorists. As the scheme gets underway, De Niro's lone wolf strikes up a rare friendship with his French counterpart (Jean Reno), gets into a more-or-less romantic frame of mind with McElhone, and asserts his experience on the planning and execution of the job--going so far as to publicly humiliate one team member (Sean Bean) who is clearly out of his league. The story is largely unremarkable--there's an obligatory twist midway through that changes the nature of the team's business--but legendary filmmaker John Frankenheimer (Seconds, The Manchurian Candidate) leaps at the material, bringing to it an honest tension and seasoned, breathtaking skill with precision-action direction. The centerpiece of the movie is an honest-to-God car chase that is the real thing: not the how-can-we-top-the-last-stunt cartoon nonsense of Richard Donner (Lethal Weapon), but a pulse-quickening, kinetic dance of superb montage and timing. In a sense, Ronin is almost Frankenheimer's self-quoting version of a John Frankenheimer film. There isn't anything here he hasn't done before, but it's sure great to see it all again.

Rober DeNiro- what else can ya say? Car chases in the south of France. What else can ya say. Secret agents, double agents, Soviet Agents, and a few agents ya just never know about. This movie keeps you entertained, and it keeps you thinking.

Ronin is a very exciting movie with alot of action. I saw a piece of it on regular TV one day and had to have it. I knew I would be able to find it on ebay. It is my type of movie with action, excitement, and a twist! I highly recommend this movie.

I bought this movie because it has 1- A good plot, 2- Great actors, 3- If you have never watched it you will enjoy a suspenseful ride through out the movie. There was'nt so much that the plot overwhelms the watcher.

My son and I love old movies, even better, we love and ador Robert De Niro. My so was trying to familiarize me with the movie, Ronin, and I had it confused with another movie, so I decided to check Ebay, to see if it was available, and sure enought, it was, so I was detrmined to get it. I was successful in winning the bid. I watched the movie, and was totally enthralled about it. My son and I were both thrilled, after watching the movie, I gave it to my son, who was a haappy camper. It seems like whenever, I want something or need it, I have always been successful in finding and obtaining it on Ebay.. I love Ebay. Great action and great car chase scenes. Robert Deniro as always is fantastic and Jean Reno is a perfect addition. This movie should be a part of any Action or Crime Drame collection

Classic De Niro, and some of the best chase scenes ever captured. The Matrix Reloaded's chase scene was technically very impressive, but the ones in this film are jaw-dropping. Decent plot, too. How can you say no to Jean Reno? That's what I thought.

I've recently decided to replace my entire VHS collection with DVDs. Besides the fact that I'm saving a lot of space doing so, I do belive that the new DVD technology offers more features, like: captioning, alternate endings for the movies or quicker functions. Also, the price on eBay was half of the retail price for this item.
