Synopsis
In this candid sports memoir, former NFL linebacker Bill Romanowski looks back on a stunningly successful, though controversial, 16-year career, during which he was a member of four teams and played in four Super Bowl games. Romanowski acquired a reputation as an aggressive player on the field as well as off. The record shows that he was repeatedly fined for brawls and altercations, and in 2000 he was charged with possession of the performance-enhancing drug phentermine. (He was later acquitted.) Romo was also named in newspaper reports about the BALCO steroid abuse investigation, and, in 2003, after testing positive for steroids, he was released from the Oakland Raiders. His single-mindedness about the game--at one time a plus--may have been his downfall, as his insecurities about his abilities may have led him to cross the line from nutritional supplements and legal performance enhancers to now-banned substances. In a tell-all that comes clean about a good career gone bad, Romo shares colorful anecdotes of his life on and off the field, in games and in practice sessions, and expresses his appreciation for the life that football gave him.
