The Rolleiflex 2.8 GX and similar 2.8 FX are probably the last of the long line of beautifully engineered German twin lens reflex cameras. The FX, still available new, differs only in having "retro" styling. The GX and FX have two major improvements over their predecessors: a coupled modern light meter and through the lens electronic flash control. Some things are not as nice. The film transport mechanism works fine, but is not fully automatic as in the past. The camera back relies on rubber gaskets rather than meshing metal ridges as a light shield. The Rollei lenses, both old and new, are wonderful. All in all, these are very high quality medium format film cameras. Although I always wished for a Rolleiflex in the past, I couldn't afford their high prices. Now, thanks to much lower eBay auction prices, I have the camera of my dreams. It takes marvelously clear photos. Digital fans can scan them in if they wish.
